Perfect 4" lift for a cheap bastard:

2" OME rear lift coils from www.4x4connection.com = $130

crank your torsion bars up front 2" = $0

2" body lift from Roger Brown = $100 or so

New Rancho or simmilar shocks = $150 or so

Thats a complete front AND rear 4" lift for $380

Another alternative is to search on various message boards's classified sections for used lifts. Usually you can find guys that are doing SAS's and are selling their old IFS lift kits for pretty cheap, $200-$300 for front end kits.

if youre going to lift ur car, do it the right way. i know $1000 is a lot, but its worth doing it the right way, instead of doing it half assed and redoing it the right way in the future.

lift coils are cool...

you can get extended shackles for the rear. that can raise it approx 1 3/4" . Downey sells rear shackles for $45, i just bought them and they're TOUGH as heck!

cranking your torsion bars to hell is a good temp, but if they're stock you will wear the life out of it quick and u can possibly crack an A arm. U can get the downey torsion bars for about $180 and their beefy as heck!

body lift is ok. i have 2" body lift, coz im running 35's, but i'd avoid body lift if at all possible. you gain NO ground clearance with a body lift. i wish i had gone with a 6" lift instead of 4" lift then 2" body.

the bi@tch of the lift is the IFS, ugh! i have trailmaster 4" drop brackets, they do the job though. downey sells an approx 10" long travel IFS lift for about $1000. YIKES!

well i guess you need to look at what ur going to be doing. if its for looks, body lift and cranking the torsions are ok.
if it's going to be a trail toy, do it right. Crank the torsion bars, and if they bust on the trail, ur stranded!

First off, he has a 4Runner which has coil springs in the rear, so he can't use shackles.

Secondly, I've never heard of anyone breaking torsion bars. I really would not worry about that. The only downside to cranking the torsion bars is a stiffer ride, and decreased travel.

The IFS lifts arent all that great. They lower your differential, where cranking the torsion bars will raise your diff. The IFS lift will only allow you to run bigger tires. A body lift and cranking tbars will do the same thing for cheaper.

If you really want to gain offroad performance, get some traction aiding devices, like lockers or limited slips. They will take you further than any IFS lift will. Combine that with some more aggresive tires, and your good to go.

On the other hand, if you want a flashy looking street ride, go ahead and get the IFS lift. That will LOOK the best.

Yup, christmas is coming and people are starting to buy. I can almost smell the SAS parts collecting in the garage!

It all depends on what you want out of the rig. If you want to have an advantage offroad, you should start with lockers and bigger tires. With the leafs in the rear, you have more options for lifts. If you want super cheap, flexy as hell, and a smooth ride, check out www.pirate4x4.com 's message board and read the FAQ for "63" chevies" or do a search. Thats what I plan on doing. Then if your still IFS up front, crank the Tbars to match the chevies, add a rear locker, get some new meats, and if you still have some money left over, regear and add a tru trac up front. Then you will be unstopable! I wish I wouldnt have spent a bunch of money other places on my 96, while I should have been buying some sort of traction aiding device. But I'm going to do my 88 right the 1st time, money permitting.
