Then if you pull the ABS, your on your way to a Full Float rear axle with rear discs.
The ABS system on the V6's are intergrated into other systems, namely the speed sensor. If your really intended to do a SAS, think about getting the FJ80 axles, they have the ABS sensors and it would be easier to cut the housing on the front axle to swap sides so you can use the stock T-case, from the understanding I have they're supposed to be as strong as D60's.

The 4th gen rear axles are similar to the 3rd's except they have rear disc and the bolt pattern looks to be the same. There is a possibility that they can be swapped over.

is the 4th gen rear still an 8" or is it an 8.4"? Have you given any thought to swapping one into the rear of yours to match the front width? I always thought that would be awesome.

It"s about 3" wider than stock and has the larger R&P. If I ever sustain some major body damage to the back, I'll widen an axle to match, but for now it works and I don't mind the difference. I've been looking at many different combinations of axles with ABS to see which will give the best results. The problem with the 4th gen axle, there isn't any gears avaliable for them yet and I haven't looked into the FJ80's enough. Fon now it's not on the priority list. I even thought about using the e-locker center section, then cutting the axle housing and using the 4th gen outers.

you are saying they don't make gears for the 8.4?

oops, I may have jumped the gun a bit, I remember Lance saying gears weren't avaliable for his rig yet, maybe it was the front diff and you can't do the rear until then. I'll double check with Lance, unless he chimes in on this post. I've crawled underneath his rig many times comparing our axles......

Steve,

Kick-ass mods. Truly a magnificent job, both inspirationally and motivationally. I have really enjoyed looking at your site and reading this thread.

Since you have done a thorough study on what works and what doesn't work for what seems to be some of the off-roading I will be doing, I do have a question concerning lift, both suspension and body, as well as a tire/rim combo.

First of all, the facts. I have a regular cab '03 Tacoma Prerunner. I will be installing Donahoe coilovers w/ Deaver rear springs. Since the rear springs will give me 2.5" of lift, I will adjust the front to be slightly higher. I would like to run 33x12.50x15's.

Now the question: To run my tire choice, what else do you recommend, and what back-spacing amount.

Thanks in advance for any input

Well the Tacoma seems to have a smaller front wheel well opening. You might consider the 285/75/16 or you may have to do a body lift with the 12.5" wide tires. It's the 12.5 that is the biggest challenge not the 35.

Other than that, you'll need to shave your stock upper a-arms or buy a set of aftermarket upper arms that give you more clearance.

I have 4.5" BS rims. Maybe 3.5" BS would clear the stock arms, I really don't know.

I rebuilt a set of stock upper arms and run Tundra coils, these days.

Steve, do you rub the frame in the front? I rub with my 285's, so I can't see how you're not rubbing with the larger and wider tires. Is stock backspacing 4.5" also?

I have since removed the last of the bling bling and with the stock upper arms they have so much adjustment that the alignement guys kicked the back out, and the front in and still had adjustment to get the correct caster and camber.

I rub a bit on the frame, but that really is it.

If I get lucky finding two sets of wheels and tires I can play with, I'll let everyone know what it's going to take not to rub the frame using 3.5-4" backspacing. I will note that I'm probably going to go to a 15" rim so tires are cheaper and more readily available.
