I was at the salvage yard today to get oh **** handles, and noticed they had wrecked 4x4 with rear locker, so here are the 2 questions.

1- would it be worth it to add a locker to a 2wd that won't see much offroad?

2- What is involved in swapping it, I would think it would be easier to by the whole axle, push button for the dash? What else? What price range should this be in?

I didn't even talk price with them as my usual contact was out on vacation.

Seems pointless spend the money on converting it to 4 wheel drive or getting a 4 wheel drive rig...

you should be able to do it for 600 - 800 dollars and thats really high. throw it on the rear, wire the elocker up, and hit the dirt. and to the guy saying its pointless...why?

It wouldn't be pointless to me, because I have a 4runner that is in great shape, it would cost be a few grand more for a 4x4 in the same condition, and I do more highway driving than offroad.

In looking through old post, what concern should I have with gear ratio's I will soon be changing tires up to 31 or 32s

also, take into account the size difference of the rear end (8" vs. 8.4"). I believe the 8.4 is 2wd, and i DO believe this was discussed relatively recently... not too sure, though.

All 4runners have the 8" period.

well concern's with gear ratio doesn't matter since your 2wd, and its most likely got 4.10's or 4.30's. Just hope its got 4.30's

is it out of another 4runner? i'd grab the whole rear axle and as much wiring harness you can and the dash button.

wiring em up is pretty easy. I have made 5-6 harnesses so far for elockers.

I dont know just seems pointless to have a offroad vehicle thats 2wd only thats why SEA.JAY he was asking a opinion I gave one... It seems like the money would be better spent on converting it to 4 wheel drive or a cheap trail rig/beater...

hes not converting it to 4wd...hes simply putting an elocker in the rear end and keeping 2wd. your statement makes no point.

and do it already. it is definitely worth it. ive got an lsd in my runner but im lt front and rear and dont do much trail riding, all high speed desert stuff.

How does it not make a point my point is a opinion read it again my opinion is do what he wants but it seems like the money would be better spent on making it 4 wheel drive "I KNOW HE DOESNT WANT TO NOW BUT THATS WHAT I SAID" instead of going offroading in 2 wheel drive BUDDY...

If you end up not wanting to put it in your truck, pull it and sell it on here, you could get around 400 bucks for it....

But, if you don't get it ASAP it will for sure be gone...if it's not already. Toyotas don't last long in recking yards, especially with an e-locker.

got it, and if he drives desert only like me, i don't believe your opinion would be the same. we're missing some parts...but he says minor wheeling...which consists of...i havnt a clue

Well im not to sure on driving desert because I know nothing about it he included that im sure my opinion would be different but where I drive 2 wheel drive doesnt get you far it can get you far enough to be SCREWED if you get stuck haha...

you got that damn right. thats why i pin it and keep my foot outta the brake. id rather break than get stuck...or does that translate into broke and stuck lol

The salvage yard I visit has a huge selection of 4runners, there were about 15. I just happened to notice it in this on as we were pulling the handles. They had quite a few 4wds so there may have been others. The other nice thing is Nashville isn't exactly the rust belt, so most are in above average shape.
