Question 2nd gen 4runner spare tire carrier

Ok so i was just wondeing if anybody has taken the swing out spare tire carrier and mounted it on another 2nd generation 4runner which didnt come with one stock. I know there are mounts inside the body but I am just looking from some comments from somebody that did it or possibly a write up of it somewhere. I already have the tire carrier and tailgate from another 4runner which I had but sold for parts. Any advice would be great. Thanks

not sure about second, but its been discussed about the 3rd gen and they will definately not work. First the body has to be reinforced, then you need a whole new tailgate. PM scofco to take some pics of his for you and that might help...

Did it on mine . The reinforcement that comes on the second gen with a factory swing arm tire carrier is pretty sad but does an ok job of reducing the body panel flex when the arm swings out. Its basically a trapozoid shaped piece of steel not much thicker than the body steel welded inside the corners with a captive nut for the bolts. For mine I used a piece of 1/4 x 2 1/2 inch inch steel bent to the contour of the inside at each mounting position. I positioned the swing arm in it's proper location and marked the bolt holes, then drilled them out. Then positioned each new plate behind the new holes and tack welded them in position and drilled them out as well. Used lock nuts on the inside and end of story, sorry no pics of the process. Maybe some one else has done this as well and has some.

FYI, TAG is a renaming of an older company (I think it was Kennesaw something or other). Anyway, they had terrible customer service and poor quality work. There are some threads about it either here or T4r.org, search before you consider them, and buyer beware; they changed their name to escape their reputation.
