Hi all
I just put a new alternator in 200 miles ago. my charging light came on and i am only at 12-13 volts. I replaced the battery at the same time as the alt. I just bought the rig after it was sitting in a shop for a year. they replaced the opt. bat before they sold me the rig cuz its been sitting so long. hmmmm.
what would eat Alt. ? shorts in what? hmmmm

Where did you get the last alternator? Aftermarket alternators are notorious for being crap. I've had them last for only a couple thousand miles before and have even had them test them at the store before purchase only to discover they weren't any good right out of the box.
If it is someplace like Autozone or Checker that you got the last one, I'd say take it back for the warranty, stick in the replacement, but have them load test it on the bench before installing then afterwards also.
The last one I got from Autozone after having a short lived one, I got it back to the house to install it and noticed a sound coming from inside the alternator. When I checked I found an assembly screw floating around inside it. It was enough grief to go back to the store that I just pulled it apart and took the screw out. I believe it is the one I still have in my '85 4Runner. Something tells me it wouldn't have lasted as long with that screw floating around in it though
A bad battery can kill an alternator, but I doubt it could do it in only a couple hundred miles. Nevertheless, make sure and test it as well. Make sure all your contacts and battery cables are in good shape too. Lastly, any chance the bolts aren't tight enough and the alternator slipped? A loose belt could be a culprit.

I agree, most rebuilds are crap.. But you can get a good one if you keep trying - generally.

I buy mine at o'reilly's with a lifetime guarantee.. I make them replace it every time it craps out. Once so far. Heck of a deal for $98.00

CHECK THE BELTS

Hah I ended up stripping the top mount that is the tensioner mount too so its been kiling the thing. But today my bro was driving my truck and It came real loose and the Alternator and water pump both stopped working thus no power and spray going everywhere,,,, So check your belts.

Suggest you check your charge fuse located off of the Yellow wire on the alternator.
The alternator will have a "L" stamped next to the yellow wire.
