2002 385's 4.10 gears. Am I missing something?
My question is related to gearing. From my door jam sticker it appears I have the 4.10 gears. I know this is not ideal with 285's but I think it will be fine. I drive mostly around town and I'm not a super fast driver. I just take my time (old age maybe). I do occasionally do a road trip but again, I'm not a speed racer. My first runner was a 92 with the 3.0 and it was a dog compared to this 3.4 so my expectations are pretty low. I do wheel a few times a month but nothing at all crazy. Just some basic trails and stream crossings (old age again). If it's intolerable I may re-gear. here are a few of the questions I have about gearing that I haven't been able to get a solid answer on.
1) speedometer/odometer
I know the speedo will probably be a little off (although I'm spot on now with 265/75's) but that's not a huge deal for me but what about the odometer? Will it record more miles than I actually drive or less or will this not change?
2)RPMs
With the current 4.10 gears I run very low RPMs on the highway. At 70MPH I'm under 2,500rpm or right around. This will change, but in which direction? From reading it sounds like it may be even lower with larger tires? Is that correct?
Well, I thought I had more questions but that's about it. Is there any other effect re-gearing may have that I'm missing. I know re-gearing may help gas mileage and acceleration and also just general wear and tear on the tranny and engine. What else?
Also, and this may be a little off topic, what other tire size choices are there in the 33 range besides 285/75/R16 and 255/75/R16 (I think that's right. The taller skinny 33's) Is there anything else?
Thanks!
