Question 2000 4R Running very rough when cold

Guys.....I'm lost!
The wifey's 2000 4Runner w/124k has been running real rough lately when she first starts it up in the am....kinda has a surge to it. As usual...I am rarely in her 4R and got in today and the CEL light is on. She tells me..."oh that...it's been on for a while"!
Anyway...I been meaning to change plugs and wires and just finished up and it didn't make any difference. Also cleaned the MAF sensor. So...borrowed a scanner to see what the CEL says and got 4 codes!
The codes I got...in order are:
P0171 - Too lean Bank 1
P0100 - MAF or VAF Malfunction
P0110 - IAT Sensor Malfunction
and another P0171
Not sure what the VAF & IAT even are????
Looking for some help so I can get her back running 100% again..
What needs to be done?
Thanks
Todd

IAT= Intake Air Temp
VAF= I don't know

Sounds like it could be a vaccum leak somewhere. I am also trying to hunt down the p0171 code on my GF's 2001 tacoma. i am going to get in there after work today and I will let you know what I find. I have also cleaned the MAF and checked for vaccum leaks and cleared the code but it came back.

Ok Todd, all those codes you mention are pointing to the MAF sensor being the main issue (the second P0171 is probably just a pending code). I would start by replacing that first (a new MAF is about $100 from the dealer.......don't bother cleaning it because I doubt it will fix your problem in this case) and see if that helps your truck at all......replace, clear the codes, take it for a 20 min ride and then check for new codes. Post back after you have done this and if that didn't fix it we can give you more direction.

This should help you with MAF replacement:

BTW, did you use OEM plugs and wires in there too?
I always ask because often people use aftermarket stuff that just exacerbates the problem.

Jamie...thanks for the info. I'll look into getting a new MAF......
Had a thought.....Could I swap the MAF out of my 1997 4R just to see if it fixes it?
As far as plugs and wires....OEM wires and NGK4302 plugs.
Thanks
Todd

I had the same exact problem. I changed the plugs, cleaned the maf and pcv yet still had the problem. I then did the Seafoam through the pcv and in the tank 2 times and now it starts every crank, does not die out nor the idle gives me any trouble. I'm now a firm believer with Seafoam.

No, the MAF on the '97 is different than the '00.
