2000, 2.7 4Runner- overdrive or not?
I've had this Runner for 7 months and was pretty sure that the OVERDRIVE was a factory option that I didn't have. However, a Toyota salesman told me today that it did indeed have overdrive. If it does it doesn't work. I do have the OD button on the shifter but like I said, it doesn't do anything nor does an OD light come on. Soooo, is OD an option ?? or is mine not workin?
Thanks, Beard

Im guessing its just the light that doesnt work or maybe the button. You can tell if its not engaging by going about 50 on the road then push the button in, automatically the revs should go up and when you push it again and it pops out, revs should go down.

As far as i know, overdrive was standard, not an option. it's part of the transmission. Instead of having a L, 2, 3, D pattern, the overdrive, when it's off, acts as 3.

Overdrive
I took it for a test run and the overdrive is not workin. I'll check the fuses and wiring. I'm $issed about all the fuel I've wasted in the past 7 months. Kinda hard to believe that the light nor the overdrive works. Oh well! Any more ideas or answers? I would like to hear from a 2.7 owner.
Thanks guys,

It could be that OD is working but the switch isn't........meaning that OD is always on?
At 70 MPH I'm turning 2250 RPM. I'll checked at 60 and forgot. I'll get more data on my next test run and report back. I left a message with my local dealer/ service manager and he didn't even return my call. I despise those dip sticks!!
Thanks again!

I was told that I had a 3.91 ration and my tires are 225-75R-15, 27 inches tall. So where does this leave me?? Is my OD in OD all the time or does it not work at all?

Your OD off switch may not be working.

Well, I decided to start off with the E Z things first so I removed the cluster and checked the bulb.....bulb OK. Next was the switch on the shifter knob. When removing the knob I noticed a broken blue wire instantly. Also, the OD switch was not together properly. Some dumb ass couldn't put it back together. Anyway, one wire was broken and the switch contacts could not make contact because of the way it was put together. The OD was indeed activated by not being hooked up. I didn't think about the OD light saying that the OD was OFF....or does it say ON! At any rate it looks good to see the light come on and for the OD to be NOT engaged. I have a lot more low end torque now that the overdrive can be deactivated. I'm tickled that I prolly saved $100 or more bucks by troubleshooting myself. Thanks for all the input. Several of you guys were right on the money!!
