Reading through the fantastic sticky about upgrading brakes I couldn't find the info I seek. Years ago I upgraded my 4runner's brakes to the 199mm calipers and rotors. Now I'm having trouble with one of my calipers so I'm going to get new 231mm calipers but my Brembo rotors are still good needing just to be turned. Are the rotors the same for use with between the 199mm and 231mm calipers or is there a difference going to the 231s this time?

The rotors are the same. The 231mm calipers have bigger pistons and pads which will absorb more heat from the rotors and thus will reduce brake fade compared to the 199mm calipers. The 231's may also provide a bit more braking force because of the bigger pistons and brake pads. there was change in the 231mm calipers to accommodate a clip for the rubber boot in each piston. this was to prevent water from entering the piston and causing it to rust and seize.

Keep in mind that the 231s are in fact bigger calipers overall than the 199s, not just the internals. You might want to make sure they're going to clear your wheels.

I appreciate the info and advice. I'll have to read up more on the wheel clearance. I remember some people had to grind a little on the caliper or their stock wheels (neither of which I would like to do if possible). Right now I have some '06 Tacoma wheels on my 4runner but would like to swap my stock 6 spokes back on with some snow tires during winter. I'm also looking at some Pro Comp wheels for next summer and I'd hate to buy wheels if they won't fit with the new brakes. 17" wheels clear the 231s fine I've read, not sure about any stock or aftermarket 16" wheels that will clear them... more research is ahead of me. Thanks again.

Try to find the TRD Taco wheels that are also on the Tundra. I am willing to bet they will clear. At least I hope so. I picked up 4 of those 16" wheels for $125 with decent tires on CL.

I think the stock 3rd gen 4Runner 16x7.5 alloy wheels (offset = +15mm) will clear the 231mm calipers. However, the OEM LC80 16x8 alloy wheels won't clear them because of the offset (offset = 0).

The stock split 3 spokes will NOT clear without a spacer or better, adapter. The TRD Taco wheels clear the 231's on my 99.

The LC80 wheels will fit but you need to grind the inside like you have to do on the 16" stock split 6 spoke wheels. I'm doing that right now on my 96 4Runner now that I put the 231mm brakes on. Here's an idea of how much to grind on the LC80 wheels:

Thanks for the correction Hab. I remember reading somewhere that the 2001-2002 alloys can clear the 231mm calipers so I thought the earlier model can clear them also as the stock 3rd gen 4Runner alloy wheels have the same size and offset

It's not the offset of the wheel that's the problem, it's where the back of the wheel mounts to the rotor. Some wheels have greater clearance than others even though the offset may be the same.

hey so im gonna do the tundra brake swap on my 98 tacoma extra cab. just reading your post here, what year did they do the change? as i would like to have the boot clip! im gonna order bran new so what year of tundra brakes should i order? thank you for this wealth of info!

2002+ but make sure you get the big calipers. Places like AutoZone, Advance Auto list them as the big brake calipers and make sure they're stamped properly.

Rockauto is the way to go in my opinion. If you order for a 2006 Limited quadcab, you will be just fine. My Raybestos remans came with the clip on them. Very pleased with the quality and the feel of the brakes. So good you can just forget them, finally.
