Replace them with poly bushings. It will feel loose and wander even without hitting bumps. Grooves in the pavement and truck humps will make it really swim.
What tire are you driving? I had a set of Bigfoot AT Dual Grooves. They were horid! The truck would walk/swim/float or what ever you want to call it all over the road. Sometimes it was down right scarry. You always had HANG onto the steering wheel. I replaced them and it is a different truck. (the bushings also help, I did them first but it was still bad)

there wasn't any clicking in the steering going on before?
I had something similar in my 2001 model, and it's bl#@dy annoying
it tracks pretty straight on good roads, but a sharp pot hole will make it sound like a click, and it can move about slightly at speed with bad roads.

great! can you recommend the exact part name, brand, where you got them?

I have recently started getting that "side to side" feeling at highway speeds, but mine only occurs when I am close to a 18 wheeler. I guess the air flow from the truck is causing the 4Runner to become unstable. For those of you who have replaced your bushings in the steering rack is it a easy diy job or better left to a trained mechanic? My 4Runner is a 99 4x4 with 130K miles. I just had the sway bar end links replaced on both front sides. I very rarely take this vehicle off road...

Mine was from our family mechanic and he charged me $100 would have been $150-$200 for anyone else....the bushings only cost $26 with shipping from wheelers so if you are able to do it yourself it would be worth it. you can look up the install and see what you think. to me it looks easy but i just didnt have anywhere to do it.

There are a few threads on here on install that are pretty in depth. I have the bushings sitting on my counter at home and yes it is a Half day job for the DIYer and about an hour or two labor for a skilled mechanic. I am just waiting for my sway bar end links and bushings to get here so I can take care of all of it at the same time.
