'01 4Runner Sport - Thrown Rod, need help!
I just found this forum during my internet searches for a plan of attack on my '01 4Runner.
I have 188k miles on the original 3.4 V6, 2WD Sport SR5.
A local shop has found a used engine with around 100k that they can install for me everything out the door for $3500 (20hrs labor?). Should I have this thing fixed or should I just sell it to a junk yard or part it out? Need some advice! The rest of the car is in good shape, the AC blows cold, the transmission seems fine. I just put new tires on 3 months ago and replaced the front struts. Thanks for any help.
I'm located in Austin, TX. A local junk yard offered me $1k for the whole thing sight unseen.....bleck

Find another shop. Around here The same swap would run about half of that. For 3500 I'd probably sell it but it depends on what it's worth to you. But definitely call around to a few other places. 20hrs labour is BS. It should only take any competent shop a day to do and that should be more than enough time.

If you had the tools and reasonable mechanical knowledge, It shouldn't be an problem to do it yourself. You could probably do it in a weekend. Most shops around here would charge between 600-1200 to do the install.
