What machining needs to be done in order to put the 20r head on the 22r block if any. Im new to building motors and dont know that much. I have an 86 pickup that is worn out. What year stuff do i need? An how hard is it really for a beginner?

Alright I have recently picked up a old tired 22r with 600k miles. I'm wanting to build a hybrid 20/22r for my 86 4x4.. I have the understanding that I need a 22r block older then 85 and a 20r head... I work in a machine shop so milling and boring is not a issue.. What work needs to be done and what needs to be replaced.. I'm looking to get a good 150 horsepower to the flywheel... Any help thanks guys!

I've always liked this hybrid but wanted the 20/22RE hybrid just way out of my abilities. The hp you want seems high for a 20/22R hybrid but been along time since I researched this. Have you thought about a 22RE stroker, being fuel injection will get you much closer. Don't remember if you will need to swap in injectors off of a supra or not. Just been a really long time, I was getting lots of information from Marlin's site and a 22RE performance. A stroker should have awesome torque!

will a hooker header for a 22r bolt on to a 20r head or will i have to find an exhaust manifold for a 20r? same with the cam shaft, fuel pump, and distributor? and what if i dont swap from the '86 pistons?

I did the 20/22r setup and I didn't like it. More power than the straight 22r, but still not enough IMO to make my truck practical. 5.29's on 37's.
Let's just say I'm in the middle of a 1UZ swap now. I wouldn't waste my time unless you have a specific reason to have the 22r platform. You want to make sure you have the early 22r block, it is referred to as the "Laser" block. Look it up, I can't recall exactly what the years were and then you throw on the 20r head. You are done. You can get dome topped pistons that are notched for the valves to bump the compression even more. This would likely be the best way to go if you wanted to stick with it. I had a weber 32/36 on mine and the plugs were a great color, so it was getting a good mixture and burning well. It just was still a slow as a snail and had a tough time keeping up on highways with the large tires I had (on the flats)

my original 86 block had the flat top pistons in it as well. another thought i had about the swap was, why not just mill the head down some? wouldnt that give me more compression as well? i figured that way i can stay with my offy intake manifold and hooker headers that i know fit right onto the 22r head. if i could just take them off and bolt them right onto a 20r head with out any issues id be more inclined to do the swap.
