What to look for a swap
Currently have a 93 pickup my 3.0 heads blew at 151k and after spending couple hundred and putting new injectors in... weeks before hand. The truck just sits right now getting the engine out this week or next. I've always planed to 3.4 swap but I read in a recent thread that 1998 -2000 is best years to use gets rid of egr and can't remember what else. Just looking at also dipstick and doing the oil pan (SAS soon) which years and models I need to look for. Sorry in advance if this has been covered already

Any year will work. All of the 5VZ cranks have the machining done to accept a pilot bearing. 5VZs from 98 and earlier will have the middle dipstick port pre-drilled, 99 and later, you'll need to do it yourself. As far as I know, all 4Runner 5VZs did not have EGR. The newer the engine/ECU the better the electronics, but at the same time, they have more electronics and can become much more complicated (such as the 02-04s that have an electric throttle).
And as you know, keep searching, the answer is out there.

After 97 they decided to use the same plugs for manual and auto ECUs on the 4runners. Ive heard this doesnt apply to Tacomas though. Something to look into if you have to buy an engine that was an auto and want to convert it to use with a 5 speed.
