update. so looked at a 98ecu and the plugs are totally different than mine. the 98 ecu has small plastic squares in the center of the plugs between the pins and mine does not. I also learned that the plugs from 95-97 are all the same, but the 95-96 plugs are grey and 97 and later plugs are white. the 95-96 ecu with grey plugs does not react properly to the boost. it starts hard and acts out of time during normal driving. so I purchased a 97 ecu from a local yard. slapped it in there and now it starts right up and seems to run better at idle. builds good boost while hammering down. drivability is the same so im happy. hope this is helpful for someone. I learned something.

I know on 4runners,
96-97 manuals ecus are the same *2 row*
96-97 auto's are the same *4 row*
98-99 manuals and auto are the same plugs but different ecu's
and then i think 2000 and on the plugs are smaller but same between manual and auto.

crazy how many different ecu s there are. thinking about sending my extra throttle body off to get bored in the am. I found a box it will fit in today. any idea of the time it takes lc e to turn one around? also how do you like the 7th injector deal. did it make a big difference?
