Electrical question on 3.0 to 3.4 swap????

I have just put a 3.4 liter from a 1998 "limited" 2 wheel drive 4 runner, into a 1993 Toyota 4 runner, 4 wheel drive. Both have an automatic transmission. I have read many threads, however, I am unsure about the wiring to the ecu, etc. I have both wiring harnesses, complete, as well as both computers (ecus).

My questions are:
1 Which ecu should I use. The one from the 1998 3.4 Litre or the original 1993 ecu?
2 Which plugs should I keep, how do I wire this up?

If anyone has any advice, or helpful links I would really appreciate it. All I have to do is complete the wiring and I am on the road again.

Judging by those two questions you may have bit off a bit more than you can chew. Good luck. Try the search feature. It is really helpful. So is "Research" You won't get much luck with questions like "How do I wire this up? LMFAO! Sorry for coming off as a jerk but those are two reaaally stupid questions!.

Call Toyota and give them your VIN. Find out if the donor truck has a Theft Detterent System. From what I understand all Limited 4Runners have this.

Is your truck Auto or Manual?

From my understanding, you have to use both, the ecu and the wiring harness from the donor vehicle. Since your vehicle is 4wd and the donor was 2wd, I dont know if the hookups would be the same. Good luck. When you figure it out, write up a post.

I agree, if you are asking question number 1 you may have a tough road ahead. The 3.4 engine needs the 3.4 ECU. Can't help with question 2 though, because I used the harness from ORS. Once I got the ECU in place and plugged the harness together that was the end of the wiring work. ORS has good info on the swap in general, check it out, and there is a ton of info here on YT so keep reading and good luck.

The truck that I am putting the motor in is an automatic, 4x4. you may be right about the theft deterrent. If thats the case, then I am going to have to acquire, a 4wd AT harness and ecm for 1998. And last but not least, "neoworm," you are a jerk. Thanks again to Rocketwrencher and WFO for your replys.

cadman, I went to the ors site and it provided me with the information I needed. ORS is a great site not only for parts, but for an education in conversions. I really dont have the monetary means for the ors at this time. I still have one other idea that I am going to try. I will let you know what it is, if it works....Thanks again

you have to use the 3.4 harness and ecu for that motor, judgeing by your questions i would save some money and get the ors engine swap kit and there advice on which tranny to use or you might have so problems. just trying to save you some head aches, or if your very determined you could do it yourself, thats what i did

If you decide to get the ORS kit you better hurry. ORS is closing it's doors on 12/18.

Well, heres how it went......As mentioned I started this swap (3.0 to 3.4) on a 93 4 runner, not knowing just what I was getting into. My problems began when I realized that the donor motor was out of a 1998 limited 4 runner, 2 wheel drive going into this 93 4wd 4 runner. Well, sometimes if you dont know you cant then you can, if you know what I mean. Since I am not to concerned about all the bells and whistles, and am working with peanuts for a budget, I decided to run both the ecu for the 98 2wd 3.4, and the 93 4wd ecu as well. I left the old ecu intact until I could decide what I would and wouldnt need later. I took the 98 2wd ecu and powered it up by going to the E-12 connector on the ecu itself and supplying it with a 12 volt supply from the battery and ignition. At first I wasnt getting any fire at my plugs, so after looking at wiring diagrams I found the ignition module, and powered the black/red striped wire from my accessory and I had fire. Thats when I could get it to start and then die after a few seconds. So with the help of cadman, rocketwrench, wfo, rob, cartune, and neoworm (the jerk) I found out that my maf was not getting any power. I think that all my power problems stem from the fact that since all my efi operations including maf, and ignition, depend on power from the efi relay. Since I used the old fuse box under the hood, which doesnt supply these ops, would explain my "no power"...... I am going to put a relay in between and I will let you know how it goes....

PS..NEO I did bite off more than I could chew. No hard feelings?

No worries man. I was just tying to motivate you to do some research. There is alot of info on here and questions like "How do I wire this up" are pretty general and a bit annoying in my opinion.

Good luck. Sounds like you have your work cut out for you. As far as advice I can't say I really undrstand how you are trying to make this work. So once again. Good luck.
