3.4L clarification

Need some clarifications, most of the swap info I've already know. Whats most confusing is the auto transmission to drive shaft? Is it easier to use my existing 3.0 tranny with stock drive shaft or the 3.4? If I use the 3.4 will it bolt right up or is there any adapters or major mods??

If this is a 4wd, you will have to stay with the original 3.0 transmission and transfer case since they will not separate, and the front drive shaft output is on the correct side for your truck, where as the 3.4 transfer case has the front output on the opposite side. If its 2wd, run the 3.4L trans.

Thank you!! That clarifies alot. Nowing know that I will have to use the 3.0 tranny, ECU wouldnt matter rite. The 3.4 auto ecu would work okay??

It will only work if you use a T100 ECU. The VSS sensors in the tail of the transmission changed in the newer Tacomas and 4Runners. The ECU from a T100 will work but you have to use a T100 harness and engine (or engine parts). Check out this thread:

PLEASE do clarify. I've research and so many people out here are confuse. I've bet not just myself but other as well.. Now if im putting a 3.4 long block automatic with ECU do I have to used the T100 ECU + wiring harness? I've read on this same site that I would be able to use the T100 ECU only and would be able to pass CA SMOG.....

Okay guys found out some info but needed more clarification, I’ve turn away two 3.4L complete long block swaps w/ wiring harness and ECU at a great cost because of this clarifications deal… I understand, it would be best to get a rolled vehicle. I believe this would not benefit me since I’m keeping the A340h…..

What I have is a 88 4Runner Auto 3.0L

Questions >>>>

1. If I use the A340H tranny from my 3.0 do I will have to use any year T100 Automatic ECU to AVOID the VSS issue or would any year be compatiable??
2. If I have to use the wiring harness and ECU from a T100, can still purchase any generation 3.4L motor or would I have to use a specific generation?? (This is to avoid complications from my 4Runner body plugs to ECU…and plugs to sensors, MAP sensor, O2 sensors and etc…)
3. HELP, advice, guidance, anything would really help. I know what I want, but I’m not sure about compatibility. As for wirings, swapping, modifying parts here and there, I think I’m mechanically inclined to do this swap.

the most IMPORTANT thing for the 3.4 swap is the ecu and harness. Make sure those match up. You can then use that on just about any year (not all years though) 3.4

For instance you can use the ecu and harness out of a 98 4runner with an 97 engine from a taco and the 340f from a 96 4runner.

In your case you can use your 340h out of the a 95 t100 with just about any ecu and harness. Just make if you are using an auto ecu and harness. You can not use a 94 or later t100 340h because they do not have the speed sensor in it.

I have an 88 auto as well using my original trans. I could care less about the speed sensor. its pointless in my opinion.

The reason I'm concern about the VSS is, SMOG, I dont know if VSS would effect California Emmission. If it does then I have a big a issue. I would assume it would because of how strick Cali is. I've also research and was told the shifting is all wack out. Is this TRUE??

Back to the main subject, so basically, my orginal 340h is no good. My only option would to get any 3.4L motor with any complete AUTO wiring harness + ecu (same car) + a 95 or newer T100 Transmission.....

Is there another 4x4 automatic transmission that I can use?? I need something that would bolt on to my drive shaft and drive lines with little or no mod. Since I'm not too knowledable in those areas.

my suggestion to you is one to do more research on yota. if you think that you cant handle the swap just go out and get something with the 3.4 already in it. it will save you ALOT of time, money and agrivation. If you arent knowledgable with mods then you really shouldnt be considering a 3.4 swap.
