3.4 liter Build Runs rich Codes P0120, P0171, P0505

OK--it has been a long time since i posted to this thread but i finally am at that point where the i am almost done. Not a swap per se but i know trying to put a motor into a different application expands your understanding..... However--here is scenario

rebuilt 3.4:
weasy2k cams (258 duration--mild....)
Manely high flow valves
"O" throttle body gasket (versus "D" tb gasket)
Doug Thorley headers and complete free flowing exhaust

Info:1999 Cali emissions 4runner, 3.4, 5Spd, New Tps, New AFR's, Rear O2, Cleanded IAC Valve, ....etc....there isnt much that isnt new ..etc...i will be swapping the 1999 TB back in. Currently i have the 1997 one in there. I am running the 1999 IAC though

Well started it the first time without the rear O2 and it barely ran and threw codes P0120(TPS), P0171 (Lean), and P0505.....but it is running like dog crap and really rich. I am going to go through everything and make sure it is all correct/operating correctly

I am not a new to all this--but i am getting a whipping on this so far. Maybe is not really what i am looking for--i need some input from folks that have actually gone through the process. Read and searched Midiwalls....etc...odeals. It wont idle and the new cats are glowing red when it was first run.....i am at a lost.....

Oh and when i first ran it i had the 1997 Fuel injectors and FPR on their--but will be changing back to the 1999 injectors and FPR.....

Help is greatly appreciated

THanks

Henry

OK--so this is what we think me narrowed it down to. I used the injectors off a 1997 3.4, 49 states. From what i have read they were rated at 240CC but actual was more like 238CC. The 1999 injectors (Cali spec) look like they are running at 245. Is it likely only 7cc would throw the computer off that much? We figure that because the "tendencies" of each injector are different it wouldnt even be in the computer tables.

Does anybody know alot details about these 2 different injectors?

1999 Part number--23250-62040 (i think they are Nikki)
1997 Part Number--23209-62030

The computer should be able to compensate for 7cc difference. I would think it would just try to trim more fuel out till it hit 14.7 Afr. I ran Supra injectors for a while and they are 305cc . This was on a boosted motor though.

Do you have a scanner that can view live data from the ECU while your truck is running? I would look at the fuel trims and see where they are at.

Good luck, Sometimes when we make a lot of changes at once its harder to troubleshoot a problem.

Thanks for the response--i figured it out.

Just a follow up and for your information—These two parts are not interchangeable per se. These are your guys numbers [RC Engineering] from my cleanings. Figured I would pass the info along in case it is ever needed by somebody else

1997 Injector, 3.4 liter Toyota, Part #23209-62030: @165K miles
Ohms:14.1, 240cc, No pintle cap

1999 Injector, 3.4 Liter, Cali Emission Toyota, Part# 23250-6240: @100K miles
Ohms: 13.8, 250CC, Large off white two hole Pintle cap which is easily broken and there are no replacements for it as of yet

It is part of the Air Assisted Injection Toyota developed. All 3.4 have it but depending on the injector and application the programming may differ and a few other items.

This is the cause of my problem because the pintle cap is integrated into that Air Assisted Injection. Different injectors and specs seal or assist differently.

LMAO.
How are you liking the cams? I'm thinking getting some 262's for my rebuild.
How do you compensate for the grind? Any pics?

Yeah, i felt like a horses arse--but i went to the book again and.....that where the number came from. But i did learn that 99 Cali injectors flow 250CC's whereas the 97 injectors only flow 240CC's. Not much but hey, should help with tuning

I like the set-up. I think i should have gone a little more aggressive on the cams but i can feel the power. It cruises and runs smooth. Granted the bottom end from the front crank pulley to the pressure plate was balanced to within a gram i do believe. The throttle response is also a ton better--more crisp throttle response. Pulls strong to 5500 rpms

but my cams are 258's and are a mild grind. I still havent dyno tuned it yet either. I figure i should get an extra 10-15 after i get the URD ECM2 and dial it in. There is a spacer under the bucket to account for the grind....

Here is the motor build sheet:

--Weasy2k Cams (258's)--But i think these can be purchased from -Colt Cams in Canada also
--Manely High Flow Stainless Steel Valves
--5 angle valve job
--Dave Crop Balanced and built Bottom end (40 over)
--Doug Thorley Headers--Very nice by the way
--Magna high flow Cats
--Dynomax Turbo Muffler--custom exhaust
--Little mods like "O" shaped throttle body gaskets, deck plate....ods and ends

I stlll have a few things to buttom up so when it is done i will post a build article and dyno numbers. But take into consideration i wasnt building this motor to hot rod--i built it to climb the grades and be reliable on the trail.

Will post a complete build article one i get it all dialed and prettied up.

And i know this sounds like a fish story but i did some preliminary mpg calculations and this is what i got

300 miles @ 13.64=21.99 MPG??

That doesnt sound right for 35's ....etc...I reset the trip odo so we will see what this next tank of gas gets....if this is the case--it is going to make my build that much better (better Return On Investment ROI).....

yeah, ive got some arias forged pistons from S2S. He was sold out of the valves by the time i was ready to order. I've got a ported and polish intake, trd s/c, urd pullies, mapECU2 from URD, walboro fuel pump, supra injectors.
My cams need work, so i figured i'd upgrade.
I'll call colt cams up.
Also, did you say thorly headers? How did you get them to fit? Mind taking some pics to show clearances and stuff? I thought i could only fit downey's on a 3.4 swap?
Cheers,
Greg

I wasnt a 3.4 swap--I was just a 3.4 build. I also didnt use studs, i went to hardend bolts--and put them on when i was putting the motor back together. over 300 miles and no leaks. Guess i need to retorque the bolts though

Manely will make the valves for you--just tell them what you want/need and boom--done.

The cams and high flow valves came from Sea2Sky Tuning (Weasy2k). But i am probably the last person to get a set before he closed down shop. The folks that grind the cams are Colt Cams out of Canada and i think they would sell you a set if you contacted them. You can also get the valves special order from Manely. My bottom end was pretty much stock except (40 over though) for the rings which were ordered by my engine builder Dave Cropp. So besides the head job, rings, and kick ass balance job--thats about it....oh...and the headers are Doug Thorleys.

I think i have at least 30 additional ponies, but wont be able to tell until i get it dynoed. And i have to purchase the piggy back controller from URD to dial it in. But i do feel a difference. Basically it is about back where it was before i put 35's on there...and throttle response is much better.....
