So, I went down to my local Toyota dealer today to get my brakes done. I have 50k on the car and it's time, I also have the vibration when applying the brakes....FWIW: They had to turn the rotors @ 30k, but it was covered under warrenty.
$99 for the front, $99 for the rear... $200 to turn the front rotors !!! They are out of their mind. So, I told them to forget it, I'll go elsewhere.

Where do you guys have your brakes and rotors done ? Dealer or outside shop. They of course were chasing my down saying that and outside shop doesn't compare to the dealer. Maybe, but $400 is a hefty amount of money.

FWIW: They said they charge an automatic 2hrs of work for doing the rotors.

ETA: I can buy brand new oem front rotors for $71.00 each ! Jeez.

To simply replace pads and rotors (assuming they are slip-off rotors) We charge 1 hr labor + parts.

To replace pads and turn rotors(see above) Most shops charge 1.5 hrs x hourly rate + parts.
So we would charge ~$170.00 ish + tax to do the same thing.

Try calling your local GM dealer. Ask them if they have one of those rotor lathes that will turn the rotors with them on the vehicle. Labor may be cheaper to do it that way.

If the rotors have already been turned once I would just replace them. If you turn them again they be even thiner and will warp quicker next time.

You can almost replace the rotors for that price. My local dealer takes $110 for turning the rotors and $180-200 for new ones installed. The rotors seem to warp easy (search and you will see) and like Eric said, if they have been turned before they will warp soon again.
I replaced mine with Brembo rotors recently when I got really fed up with the vibration while braking. You can find Brembo replacements at Tirerack.com.

On a 3rd gen, you can get new rotors with a one-year warranty and PF pads for $165 from Autozone (shipped). I would imagine the 4th gen to be somewhere near that price.

Weird, I don't remember any 4th gen warped rotor problems.

Whatever you do, don't pay the Stealer a price that absurd for turning rotors.

Please don't turn your rotors... The Toyota rotors really can't handle it. They'll get too thin and it's just not safe.


For $110 you can get a pair of blank Brembo rotors:

Add $65 for drilled or slotted, or $85 for both.

If you really don't wanna pay that, then spend $65 and get a set from NAPA (or other parts store).

Either way, they're a breeze to install and you'll get a lot more quality for your money.

I my opinion DOn't go with the cheapest brake parts you can find. There are many different grades of pads and rotors in many different price ranges. I like to use Ceramic pads when I can they are queit and clean, plus they can take the heat of oversized tires more info here check out Advance Autoparts

I have had many new Toy owners complain how often they have to do their brakes. Not to long ago I had an angry lady customer come in complaining about how she burned up a set of pads in just under 30k miles with her '04 Tundra, and yes she was on the stock wheels and tires.

Like midiwall said it's just not worth it to turn the rotors.

So, Toyota has called me about three times (I sent a letter to the owner, they also did their follow up call.) I gave the impression to the Service Manager yesterday that I could care less. He called again and said that it was bothering him that they have lost my business. They keep asking what they can do for me, but I'm not givng them anything... I explained about the rotors and how they have already been turned, 6mo ago) and what people on this board have said. The guy is going to call Toyota and seeing about having the front rotors replaced. Otherwise, I'm going with the Brembo suggestion.

Does Brembo even make rotors for the 4th Gen ? Everything I have seen only lists 2001 and below.
