I just found this site and I have to say I am impressed! It's very cool!

Now to my question: I have the front wheels off my '87 4-Runner and the races look ok. However the bearings have a bit of lateral slop in them when I push (gently)... is this suppossed to be there?
Oh one more... how on earth does anyone measure the ft/lbs for tightening the adjuster nut? It's huge (about a 2.25 inch nut) and I have noooooooo way to get my torque wrench on it.

What do you mean you can't get the torque wrench on it? Do you mean that the socket is a 1/2 inch drive and you have a 3/8 inch drive? Or do you mean you don't have the 54mm socket to fit over the nut?

Hi Steve,
The adjuster nut itself is about 2.5 inches in diameter and about 1/8th of an inch thick. It is a huge flat nut! What I was wondering is if there is a way to measure this without buying a socket to fit the large diameter of the nut?

I'd think the easiest way is to go buy the 54mm socket (Thats what it is on mine anyway). It's about $20 at the auto store. You can also do a search at 4x4wire.com about this, as the socket size has been talked about a lot over there.

Well, its 54mm on the nut, I dont use a torque wrench, I use feel only. Go till you have zero freeplay, then snug it up a bit more, these are large bearings and the snug can be more than you think. As for the slop??? Do you mean when the bearing is in your hand? If so, yes, it will have slop.
