22R dead?

22R dead?
Hey folks,
First post here. I have a '90 p/u w/ 22R engine with a carb and it died on me at a stop light the other day. Here's what I found yesterday:
The starter turns the engine, but the engine doesn't even try to start.
The distributor arm spins when the starter is turning.
I have spark.
I dumped gas in the carb but it still wouldn't start.
I have gas in the tank.
When I pulled the spark plug, it was bone dry. It didn't even smell like fuel.
The engine seems real "loose", i.e., it seems to spin fairly easily.
It doesn't seem like I'm getting any compression.
The oil didn't show any signs of contamination.
The radiator was low on coolant, but not bone dry.
The air filter was clean.
Okay, so my questions are:
Could it be my timing chain slipped or the guide on it broke?
Did I blow a head gasket?
Is the engine dead and should I just move on?
Any help in this matter is appreciated.
I apologize if I'm repeating something that's been beat to death before. I did search the forum before I posted.
Thanks,
Jøff

i would bet that the driver side guide did its usual thing and broke off, then you chain slacked up and jumped a few teeth, the fact that your rotor is still spinning means that the chain didn't break, so your valve timing and ignition timing are off, that is why you have little compression and it wont start because of that, and since the 22r/re's are interference engines, you may have bent some valves and/or broke some rocker arms off

test the compression. even if the timing chain jumped you *should* be able to at least get it to pop a couple times.
if it was instantaneous you might've seriously blown a head gasket...
