89 Runner 3RZ Swap Thread

Well after much debating, and a very long drive I was able to pick up most of the parts I needed for a 3RZ swap. I will try to keep as much info in here that I can to help other. One problem I am going to run into is the oil pan, and the factory IFS. I think I have that covered.

It has some rust on the outside, but on the inside it looks great. No oil sludge, clean coolant, no bearing scoring, no noticeable wear on the timing chain guides. Leak down test shows 0% all cylinders. Engine was of unknown mileage, but I would say it would seem to be low based on the wear on the inside of the engine. Have to adjust the valves, and replace some seals and gaskets. Fabrication has already begun on the oil pan, but will need to do some refinement and fabricate an oil pickup for it. Still need a starter, flywheel, clutch, power steering pump, O2 Sensors, Evap Canister and an OBDII connector.

Need to do some cleanup on the block and re paint it. It will be a slow process but it will eventually get there.

I cut the oil pan at the flange and flipped it around. I need to clearance it for the pickup. Also the north east took it toll on part of the pan and heavy rust had eaten through. I was able to lay down some wide heavy beads with the welder and take care of that. The pan is not going to be pretty, but in the name of saving some money, and putting it in more critical parts, I am going to fabricate and modify as much as I can to make things work.

I need to clean up some of the welds, heat and bend in the right lower corner, and add metal to the other side. Then I will need to check the flange and make sure I flatten out any areas that have warped due to heat. As you can see in the middle the heavy beads that filled in the rusted portions.

The plans are:
Fabricate Motor mount plates
2.25" exhaust
New cat
New radiator
Field Serviceable power steering line
Change clutch on A/C compressor and mount to new engine
Revise Fuel lines, and fuel filter location

Let the fun Begin!

Looking good and you got a nice little project ahead of you.
With the motor mounts there are some conversions that will help you out alot.

There is a new header out made for the 3RZ swap in the early Toyotas.
That would be a good add for the exhaust and help open everything up.
