How about a diesel swap...
HPA Motorsports has created a kit to put a VW TDI into a Jeep YJ: "We chose to use the late model PD diesel from the 2003-2006 Golf/Jetta/Beetle which boasts 47mpg on the freeway. With a simple performance flash to the ECU it rates 165 crank HP and 280+ftlbs of torque"

If they can make it work in a Jeep one of you guys can certainly fit one in a Toyota. My 3.0 is running strong at 180,000+ miles but I think I'll examine this option over the next year or so.

well my question is when you are building a truck like this and putting this much money into it why worry about gas mileage anyways? my opinion is do the 5.3, yes its more complicated and yes theres a lot less information out there about it but the 5.3 has the power the fuel injection and i think you will be much happier on any trail you go on
