And so the SAS begins...

Well, i decided to make a thread dedicated to my SAS. Now i wont have to start a new thread every time i have a question, ill just post it in here.
I actually started my sas about 6 months ago when i bought the axle. I've been rebuilding it in my barracks room since then. Last week i finally started cutting and put the axle under.

here is what i have so far::

5.29 gears
Aussie Locker up front
Longfield inners, Birfs, and hub gears
Backing plate eliminator kit
vented fj60 rotors
manual aisin hubs
3" trail-gear front springs
marlin crawler high-steer
bilstein's
4" trail gear rear springs
35x12.5 Goodyear Wranglers
15x10 crappy used wheels
lock-right rear locker

...and last week i started cutting and put the axle under. I wasnt able to finish all the cutting, but i was at least able to get it drive-able.

And i was hoping to do the rear this weekend, but my rear kit came in yesterday WITHOUT the rear shackle hanger. So i guess i'll be driving around like this for another week, heh.

and for my 1st question in here.

My driver side hub is HARD to turn. Even with the wheel on i have to put a little muscle to turn it. It also gets REALLY hot after 10 minutes of driving. The brakes don't seem to be rubbing. Could the bearings be too tight? i torqued them to spec. the same as the other side, and the other side is fine. Will bearings loosen over time?

What did you torque the trunions to? What did you torque the wheel bearings to? Did you measure your wheel bearing pre-load WITHOUT the felts/rubber ring installed? No it shouldnt be that hard to turn.....

Did you rebuild the manual hubs? Most of the time they are hard to turn from a bad hub dial o-ring or too much grease.

Best way to tell is take the manual hub off and then see if it is still hard to turn. If not then you got other issues further in the axle.

Oops, I misunderstood...I thought he meant the hub/rotor assembly was hard to turn on the knuckle...my bad..

I dunno. The way he says it sounds like it could really be either.

You talking about "manual hub" or "wheel hub" ???

my fault, i meant the wheel hub. And this is the sequence i used for tightening the spindle nuts::
* Torque spindle nut to 43 ft. lbs.
o Spin hub right 4-5 rotations
o Spin hub left 4-5 rotations
* Loosen inner spindle nut
o Spin hub right 4-5 rotations
o Spin hub left 4-5 rotations
* Torque spindle nut to 43 ft. lbs.
o Spin hub right 4-5 rotations
o Spin hub left 4-5 rotations
* Loosen inner spindle nut
o Spin hub right 4-5 rotations
o Spin hub left 4-5 rotations
* Torque spindle nut to ~21 ft. lbs.

My passenger side is fine and the ONLY difference is the brand of outer bearing. The driver side is trail-gear, but i couldn't get the trail-gear bearing to fit on the passenger side so ended up having to get another one from autozone. That's why im thkning it must be the bearing isnt right or something?

Bearing drag was in spec? Are you using a pull scale?

Did you measure the seal drag first?

Sounds like they are a bit tight ...yes...

I have seen quite a few trail gear bearings that have had to be ground down to fit....that really dont surprise me....

no i didnt measure the drag at all, don't have a fish-scale. But it did feel noticeably tighter than the other side. Do you think this is something i should worry about, or will it loosen up on its own? It only has about 30 miles on the axle, and ill only be going 2-5 miles at a time until next weekend when ill go about 40 miles to get my rear spring hangers welded and my rear finished.

Ahhh you did it the old fashioned way! by feel!

If they are getting hot that is a problem. I would just take the hub off and loosen them just a bit. Shouldnt take more than 20 minutes or so....

...so the bearings loosened up on their own before i could replace them. And now i have a horrible squeel from all the grinding i did doing over the knuckles/brakes.

and the rear goes on sunday. Will have pictures.

Are you using the star washer and bending the tabs down (one forward and one backward) over the hub nuts?

..and a few more pics of what i did this weekend::

Those are 4" TG springs in the rear, w/ 3" TG springs in the front. The front is still sitting a little bit higher than the rear, heh. Maybe it will settle, we will see.
