sas tire size
I am starting to get serious about doing a sas. I bought myself an 85 axle a few months back, now it is time to save money and do research. I have been looking at other peoples' builds and I haven't seen anybody with a 6" marlin crawler sas. Why is this? Also if I had a 6" marlin sas with no body lift and stock fenders what size tires could I clear without rubbing? I would like to run 36s or 37s that are 13.50s to 14.50s.

I never noticed marlin made a 6" kit.
I feel that is way TOOO tall for anything practical.
I can run 36" with minimal rubbing. I could go a bit bigger if i did some small trimming.

yeah if your making a mall crawler/ramp champ then 6" is the way to go
too tall imo. not practical for most wheelin that's probably why you dont see many of them
you would be way better off going with a smaller kit and trimming your fenders, wanna keep your cog low. you could fit 37's with a smaller kit and some trimming/pounding.

If I could get away with a 4" kit I would probably go that route, but how much difference could 2" make? Understand that all I see is mud, snow, and sand where bigger tires make the difference (and lockers). Although I would like to get into rocks and trails when I finish my truck and have more time.

huge difference. Infact people (incuding me) think the 4" is too tall for the first year. Then once it sags am inch or so, it starts to get where it needs to be. You should be asking yourself how tall do I have to be to run x" tires, but how tall do ou have to be to run hi-steer? (3-4") than pick your tire and trim. The 4" kit will let you run 40"s with out getting too creative.

Keep in mind that when doing a sas kit, 4"s is more like 6". so 6" springs plus spring hanger and a 6" shackle. You will be closer to something like 8-9" or whatever. I did a 3" kit on my runner and go about 5"s of lift. I had to lift the rear about 5 and half to match.
I also could run 35x12.50 no problem with that set up. I currently run 33x12.50's right now.

Alright, well maybe when the time comes I will look at the 4 or 5 inch kits instead of the 6. I am planning on building a flatbed this summer, so that will take care of the rear's clearance problems and I suppose I could chop the front out if needed or maybe get hi clearance fenders. Thanks for your input.

You mentioned 35's and 37's. For 35's you NEED about 2" of lift. for 37's maybe 3-4" over stock. And you sould only lift as high as you absolulty have to. Lifting is a BAD thing, not a good thing. And like everyone said 4" is more like 7"
This was me with 4" front and 5" rear, on 36's and atleast 45* shackle angles. I even moved the rear axle back which will lower the rear end. And I was absolulty miserable on the trail until I lowered it. It was scary tippy and the suspension had a mind of its own. IT SUCKED!

4" TG springs (including the spring hanger and shackles, it's about 5" of lift)
39.5" Iroks
Quite a bit of cutting (enough room for 42's)
I wish I would have gone with the 3" springs. I think I'm going to try and lower it an inch or two.
For 35's, I'd run 3" springs.

Typically 4" straight across for pickups and 4" front and 5" rear for a 4Runner will run 37s easily with some firewall tubbing. 35s with no trimming.
Typically lifts are sized differently, some using spring size and others with lift size. A 3" spring typically yields 4" of lift once you add in the lift from the hangers and shackles over stock.

i ran 5" trail gear kit and 36 sx's no problem at all. then put a 2" body lift on and 39.5's! it was huge, i never really did much besides sand or mud, thats why i made it big.
