Nice! I'm thinking of incorporating a lap top into my new dash.

Map quest says 830 odd miles to get to Mammoth and for 3 gas stops I'm thinking that 13 hours is gonna be a good idea, especially depending on whether I hit traffic. On these long drives I set cruise at about 75 so 830 divided by 75 is ~ 11 hrs.

Or am I missing a major shortcut??

hm, i just know it's 3 hours from sd to santa clarita, and 4.5 hours from santa clarita to mammoth. fromd sd i guess i'd just take the 5N->14N->395N

From Fallbrook it takes about 7-7.5 hours so depending on where exactly you are in san diego, it's about another 1-2 hours more.

I am not sure where you are getting 830 miles from? MSN maps says 410 miles. Hmmm.... now that I think about it you probably have it set for round trip on mapquest, because that would be about 830 miles total. I used to go to Mammoth when I was stationed at Camp Pendleton and it is under 8 hrs.

What's the route you're taking? When I go that way I take 15N -> 395N. It takes less than 1.5 hours to get to 395 from North County. Google maps puts the trip in at 7 hours from the 395/15 intersection, which would put travel time at 8.5 hours (maybe 9 for you). Going up the 15 is not only a straight line north to Mammoth, it avoids LA.

Turns out that Mammoth CA is much different than Mammoth Lakes CA. That's where I was getting the 830 mile trip from :pat:

Just like going to Death Valley - not bad at all. If I can't take time off for work I could even make a weekend out of it.

Wouldn't that have sucked to find that out the hard way!!! You had me really confused for a little bit, I even was checking out the distance for me. You should definately go, the eastern sierra's are probably my favorite place to go. Hope to see you there!

No kidding, Chris. When I saw the map of the route I first used and saw that it would have taken me by the Oregon border I was thinking ummmm...Bob's cooking isn't THAT good so I think I'll stay home. I def want to meet up with people en route because it's just plain cool to caravan

FYI anyone that will be entering the 15/215 near barstow will have to deal with MAJOR traffic from 6-8pm. Hitting that on the way to DV was NOT cool. Somehow DealMaker figured that in his estimate when he pegged my arrival time.

We'll have to make caravan plans when it gets closer!

I drive the 91, 15, 395 route almost always. Friday evening traffic is terrible . . . . must be a Vegas thing. I try to leave by 1:30 or 2pm no matter what day I go up. That gets me in Mammoth for dinner most times.

It was easy for me to figure that becaue the pain from that interchange was still fresh in my mind from the 2005 DV trip, when it took me, Bob, Lance, and Henry about 2-3 hours just to get from Hacienda Heights to the 15/395 interchange near Hesperia, and that was more like mid- to late-afternoon. It seems that having to be anywhere in or near LA on the freeways after 3:00PM, especially on a Friday, is the bane of commuting.

BTW, that little 15/215 gem is actually quite a bit south of Barstow, its more like Devore or San Bernardino-ish (El Cajon Pass). If you leave early enough, don't rule out the 405 to the 5 to the 14 if you're near Camp Pendleton. Also, is your bro coming along? If not, then p/u a hitchhiker or kidnap someone, that'll get you into the carpool lanes

The bro flew in from Pennsylvaia to do the trip so he won't be making this one. At least I won't have to leave early on account of my passenger's needs. Funny you mention carpool lanes since the only time the carpool lane seemed to get me ahead was driving the 163N's carpool lane.

As we get closer to the adventure date, we'll schedule a caravan for everyone. I know I will be heading up the 405/5/14 Friday afternoon (3pmish - after work) so...

By the way, it's the Cajon Pass. El Cajon is in San Diego.

Also, the 15/215 really isn't that bad, especially compared to LA traffic, anywhere, at any time. Was there a concert at the Blockbuster pavilion when you went through there? Usually on a Friday evening it'll take about 45 minutes to get from the 210 (on the 15) to the otherside of the 15/215 merge. Once you'r actually going up the pass it's usually trouble free. Unfortunatly, they closed the side road, and I don't know if they're ever open it again. In case someone wants to explore, PM me and i'll tell you where it is.

It was just really bad around Miramar (marine base) and then the last 20 miles of the 15 before I got off on the 395N.

Lance - I know it's very early to talk about caravaning but I was just expressing that it was something I would like to pursue down the road
