Naches Run - Nov 9

Scott and I are heading up this coming Saturday. Shane had to change plans so we need a trail leader since neither one of us have run this trail before.

I'd also like to get some trail directions or maps if anyone has once.

Unless anyone's opposed to it, or knows of a reason why I can't or shouldn't, I'm going to post some signs with directions, i.e Government Camp --> of course, I would need to know where to put them.

It's been a while since I've seen a good write up on this trail. We've both got digital camcorders so we'll take pics and vids that we can post on a trail report. When we get the Faith Wheelers web site finished, we'll do our best to keep good reports. I find them not only fun to read, but also helpful in deciding on level of difficulty, learning about specific obstacles and even getting trail directions/instructions.

If anyone get help up with some background information, specifically about the Naches Trail, I'd appreciate that.

Looks like we have two groups going up next Saturday then
https://www.yotatech.com/forums/show...&threadid=2809

I ran the whole Naches two years ago, but my rig is not really capable of doing the whole thing without a locker in the rear.
And after reading what Shane posted last night, it seems parts in there are already icy.

For a real good vid on the Naches, Central 4WD down in Kent has one made by this outfit.
It is video: #17 Pucker Ridge, WA which includes 3 different areas including the Naches.
The Jeep guy's who work at Central 4WD are in the video part for the Naches.

About a month ago I used my digicam and shot a few vids off of the TV.
They are poor quality of course, but here they are.

About the only other extensive write-up I know on the Naches is the one by Eric Johnson.

For a ton of pics on the Naches, this Xterra group has quite few from it's pull down menu.

Also Rob (WATRD here) has a ton of pics on his WATTROA site under the past events area.

Also a guy emailed me who has several friends with Nissan's that have never been to the area before, and they want to tag along.
Not sure which group they will want to go with.

The post I started we won't be doing anything hardcore, and may only get on part of the Naches, if it's easily accessible.

On Eric's write-up he has some GPS waypoints marked, and Shane & Rob should have some too.

Here's some GPS waypoints for the trailhead and where the trail crosses the logging roads.

Turnoff to 70 from 410
47.13653N
121.62783W

Naches - west end trailhead
47.10324N
121.46621W

First road crossing
Some ice on one of the hillclimbs as of 11.2.2002
47.10313N
121.44230W

Second road crossing
47.10069N
121.42956W

Third road crossing
The "official" trailhead - continue up 70 to get to this spot
47.09733N
121.41846W

Last road crossing before the cabin
47.09372N
121.40473W

Map to the West trailhead

As for posting signs I'd check with the local Ranger station first, but I wouldn't really bother as it's an easy trail to follow especially if you start at the official trailhead that bypasses most of the fun parts. The only confusing spot is in the first section, and if you see a bigass puddle at the fork don't go that way. The cabin is easy to find even though it's a short walk away from the trail, just watch for the large area off to your right where people have parked among the trees.

Shane, so if we continue up 70 to this point:
Last road crossing before the cabin
47.09372N
121.40473W

turn left off of 70, then go down a side road, then park on the right?
I have never gone that way.
Just from the beginning of the west hill climb entrance.

That is a road crossing but it's not 70, use the prior set of coordinates and turn right off of 70.

Third road crossing
The "official" trailhead - continue up 70 to get to this spot
47.09733N
121.41846W

Or Rob's set which are slightly different but within 50 feet or so.
N47.09725 W121.41836

Cabin "parking lot" is at N47.09143 W121.39466

My pictures from yesterday are online now, ended up only taking a few.

Ran into their group at the cabin Proves that the smaller the group the faster you make it through the trail

Cool. I will have to program those waypoints into the GPS if I can figure out how with my software.
Last time I tried doing that with some waypoints from the Snort board, my the Nat Geo software would not do it.
The guy must have used a different setting than what my unit is programmed to use.

I'll be checking out your pics in a bit, it's open in another window

Oh, OK, that first pic you have, that is the one I have on my Fall Runs page from two years ago.
I won't do that one, to chicken.
But Jon (TooEZgoin) wants to do that in his 3rd gen, not the 4th gen

Is that part of the Naches too?
I marked it when I was there in the '03 rig.
Here is what I have:
N 47 06 11.7
W 121 28 02.0

Your waypoints sure look different than mine.
Yoda set my GPS up to read them a certain way last year.

Those waypoints are in DDD.DDDDD (degrees only) format, it looks like you're using DDD MM SS.S (degrees minutes seconds). The two are not interchangeable but you can set the format to the other, enter them, and change it back and it'll recalculate them for you.

I'm afraid I'm a real newbie with all this GPS stuff.
It's mind bobbling

I'll look at it later.
So it's best to set my GPS if I can figure out how like you have yours?

Nice pics you got.
That one where you are straddling the line, that must be on that top ridge where I have not been?

It's not necessarily better or worse, but it is easier to enter stuff manually and it seems a lot of maping programs are going to that format now. MS' Mappoint is one, that's what I used to make the map I posted.

My control panel.

I'll try messing with it to see what I can do with it.

Hey! I think by joe I got it!

I just changed to your settings, and now my waypoint for the big hill is:
47.10325
121.46723

Much closer to what you have.
Still, that is the hill I won't climb.

I'll have to find the other hill that goes into the entrance were I caught it two years ago.
