Time to get another vehicle Need Advice

My daughter Amy's 87 SR5 became mine after it overheated because of a slow head gasket leak and I've been commuting with it for a year and a half with no issues but I am ready to buy a more reliable SUV. She and I will be sad to see old WARTHOG, (she named it) gone. I am looking for advice on what to get next. My first choice would be a 4 Runner because I like them the most but I'll look at 4dr blazer or similar. Can you help me understand the generation breakdowns are for 4 Runners. I hope to find the best vehicle I can for under 8 grand that is good on gas (6cyl), can tow a light trailer (bikes, Cycles, camping stuff) Need a roof rack to throw canoe on top so I can take son fishing. Preferably 4 doors because my two 9 yr old sons are growing like crazy. (both sons adopted from Africa) My trusted local mechanic said he could look at the auction for me. I am thinking roughly of a 2000 -2006 with hopefully under 100000 miles. It will be our family's only 4wd and won't really be used off road other than snowstorm duty. Thanks for any help.
Jim

If you like 4runners why not go with a 3rd gen (96-02). I am sure you could find one for 8 grand and under 100,000 miles.
