Since I am new are there set rules for who has the right of way, when someone should pass, and other things like that?

I think in boating the big boat has the right of way. Is it the same for trail riding?

I was on a trail this afternoon and some motorcycles and atvs came riding towards me. I slowed down a little and moved a little to the right but wasn't sure if I had to stop or not.

Just be as courteous as you can. If you can easily pull over and get out of the way, do so.

Right of way goes to whoever can not get over the safest.


another courteous tip is if traveling in a group, i always hold up the number of fingers for the number of trucks behind me, so that they know how many more to watch out for. the last person holds up a fist, showing they are the last in the group.

Another general rule (because sometimes both parties think their route is les safe) is that when on a hill, the person driving uphill has right of way. It is safer in general to back uphill than it is downhill.

i live on a 2 mile dirt road with other houses on it when going up hill you have the right of way

Yeah, I always yield to uphill traffic.

i always pull over and come to a complete stop for atv's and motor bikes when it is safe to do so... if it is down to there not being enough room (hasnt really happened yet) i would assume the atv or bike would have to move for me.

we always go on, who "can" get out of the way, if somone in coming in the opposite direction, has a place they can pull into, and you don't then they should pull over a wait.

This issue has been rehashed a million times.

There really isn't a clear answer, but the one that makes the most sense is what Rob (WATRD) posted in another thread, that if you pull over everytime you possibly can, then you'll find yourself a much happier person. The other person may not be comfortable backing, or may be a jerk. If you pull over always except when completely impossible, then you are going to be able to avoid a bunch of unpleasantness.

As stated above uphill has right of way, also indicate or tell the other party when they pass how many trucks are behind you in your convoy.

Also if you are drivign in a group and run into another group, the larger group has right of way since fewer trucks are easier to pull over.

If you can make way and the other party not, just do so.

ANother one is to always pull over for groups or trucks moving faster on the trail than you, when it is safe to do so. Nothing is a bigger pain than being held up on a trail by a slow moving vehicle(s).
