most recently , ith out the extra rack on , i got 18.8 on the same route, with mid grade going east and west. also i had my a/c on both trips. i drive 5 over the speed limit and usually never have to touch the gas , going up hills or down , gotta love the vvt.

If the engine is designed for high octane fuel from the factory, I would recommend using it. If it's not, you won't see probably any gains from running it. The reason is that the higher compression ratio and timing curve of the FJ's require a higher octane fuel to keep it from detonating. The knock sensor will detect it, so if mid grade or low grade fuel is used it automatically retards the timing to adjust, but this is when you lose power and fuel efficiency. To maximize both efficiency and power, run the higher octane. On the 3.4 Liter engine, it makes or provides no benefit, because the engine doesn't need it.

Went up again today.
Combined city/freeway driving, no jack rabbit starts:
First tank
17.5 MPG
Second tank
19.567
Third tank
20.0865
I am going to break 21 to 22 or better after the engine breaks in (5K I hear) and when I switch over to Amsoil synthetics I bet.

Please be more specific.
What brand and octane fuel?
No question that the taller geared A/T's get better economy above EPA ratings based on your and other's experience.
Yeah, the 1GR will take at least 5K to break-in I've heard. But, once broken in properly, should be a 300K motor, prolly more with Amsoil.

A/T, Roof Rack, 4WD.
I have checked 3 tanks so far, 91 octane, and I am getting 20 consistently. I am up to 920 Miles on the odometer. Hopefully it may even do better after breakin.

people have kinda touched on it, but not really addressed it. active knock control. the ecu im most conditions, including cruise, will try to run the engine with as much ignition advance as the knock sensor tells it it can. this increases fuel mileage because it makes more use of the pressure generated in chamber because of crankshaft position. there is an optimum, and you can advance too much. basically, 91-93 octane will allow the ecu to run the timing right were it wants to, 87 octane will cause the ecu to pull timing, lower power and efficiency=fuel consumption.
btw, i think most toyotas dont achieve their max fuel efficiency till after 3k or so.
