To bad you could not get the engine from the 88 and the 91 truck and combine then you would have yourself a deal. lol.

I own a first gen 4runner with IFS and a 22re, but I wish I had a second gen with a 22re. They are hard to come by. I don't daily drive my 4runner, but if I did I would definately need a 4 door. I hate having adults having to slide the seat forward and get into my 4runner.

It is nothing other than Personal taste.
You hear the people who have the 1st gen, say they like theirs, the people with 2nd gens, say they like theirs. And some people like both.
My suggestion would be sit down for a while and just think over every option, good and bad.
I personally like both, i tend to lean towards mine (biased), and their are tons of parts in circulation. They can both be modified to do very well offroad, and they are both very capable vehicles stock.
Yes like everyone has said, 1st gens are leafs in the rear and 2nd gens are coils in the rear and both have the same ifs up front. You can obviously get parts to lift both, if you are looking to lift them either way, the 1st gen is already there. But it really depends on what you plan on doing with the truck.
There is also things to consider like fuel efficiency, if you are worried about it then go for the 22re, but judging that you want to modify it then i doubt it.
And about the 1st gen, a lot of people never even take the top off and if you want to then you have to figure out where to store it.
If you don't want to do a ton of work to it then get the one in nicer condition. With more work that can be avoided, the more you can spend on mods. And you already said the 88 has seen tough trail use so it sounds like more work. And you also need to make sure you can find parts/money for unexpected problems.
I have a second generation and it seems my only complaints are really due to the 3.0. where as my neighbor has a 87 with the 22re and i would rather have his, except there are some features that i prefer with mine.
They are both very capable trucks, and there is plenty of parts and modifications that are available for both!

All good points from everyone and thank you! I was able to get the 88 for a better price so going that way. It will not be a daily driver and will be more trail/weekend ride so I think all is a done deal. May try and get the 22re from the 91 and swap as you all REALLY like that engine! Would it be a straight swap or are there tons of mods required?

That is true and I do have a line on a 3.4. Just found it and they want $1200 for it. Is that a good price? It is out of a 1995 T100. I need the front axles fro the TC Front suspension I want to use to way not. Is there any benefit to putting a T100 Rear axle in too? I know nothing about the difference between the two and all these reasons are why I joined YT.

I liked the total chaos kit especially at pismo dunes. It handled great on long road trips and all around. It is definately worth the money for the kit. The tc kit also held up fine for the 4times i took it through the Rubicon Trail.
