Im building a pvc pipe rod rack for the runner. Il have pics tommorow whens its done. MY question is...how can i mount it on the bumper (its a wooden board) and have it so I can pull it off (wing nuts). I think ive got an idea with some threaded rods but if anyone knows otherwise....it would help me out.

I think he's talking about carrying fishing rods with a homemade plastic pipe holder thingie. Just curious, 1st Responder, do you have a 2x2 hitch? you might think about making an insert for that with the board and pipe holder i'm imagining. That would be better than drilling into the bumper for your threaded rod and wingnut concept. You would have to remove the bumper and reinforce the rod from the rear to make it solid.

I'd get some 2x2 square tube and some angle iron, maybe 2, two foot legnths, depending on legnth of your rod carrier. Bolt the angle iron to the 2x2 horizontally and to the board vetercially. drill the 2x2 with holes for the hitch pin. Paint it to avoid rust of course. If you have a class III hitch this is the best option IMHO, Good luck.

Do you think that he wants the rods to go straight up? Don't you think that might be a hazard if he were to go under low passes, even if you break down the rods, it might be alittle high. Just wondering. Otherwish, the whole hitch thing would be better, then you could take it off and store it during the winter and it would not be a permanent thing! Good suggestion! :beaver:

I got it working now. Check my pictures for the picture. Its not permanant I can take it off when im not using it.

That is pretty cool. I thought that you were going to do it in the back of the 4Runner. It is a good idea to do it in the front too. How did you get it to stay on the bumper? :beaver:

I used bailing twine (afro-engineering) till I can make some brackets. (live on a farm)...Im thinking of mounting it on my 82.

Did you consider Lag bolting the board to the end of a piece of 2x2, addind a nail on each side of the lag bolt to keep it from rotating on the 2x2, and using your hitch receiver? Also a little wood glue to help secure it would help.

Must be fishing for something pretty big if you've got you use your vehicle for an anchor!

Seriosly, do you just put the handle end of the rod in one of those tubes and take off down the road? I don't recall ever seeing something like that. But I don't go fishing either.

Yeah the pipe holds the rods secure so they dont get broken inside the truck. They are very common here on the east coast. Most people with cars like ours use stainless steel ones but they are around 200 bucks.
