probably not, did an oil change today on a 99 crownvicp71 and she clacked about 10 times at startup, theres always oil residue in the cylinders, unless it was sitting for a few years(if it was i hope you learned how to change oil a bit faster LOL) , with the oil filter loose it was probably just low oil pressure and the valve rockers clacking, as long as its not clacking now, you'll be just fine

I would think that you're OK. As long as all of the oil didn't completely drain out then, as 85gijunk4x4 said, there should have been enough residue in the cylinders to keep the pistons lubricated. As long as your oil pressure is okay now, it should be just fine.

Yeah, I was in a rush one day and made it 8 miles away from Jiffy Lube (Church St., Nashville, TN) on my way out of town before a cloud of smoke blew out behind me. The oil filter fell off of my 96 Corolla. Had Jiffy lube pay for a tow and had the dealer check it out. For the first time ever, a dealer actually said nothing was wrong with a car (aside from cleaning off the engine).

Wow that is incredible! First that Jiffy Lube actually paid to tow your car and second that the dealer didn't try to screw you out of hundreds of dollars in needless repairs. You're lucky there wasn't more damage because you were actually on the road and driving when the filter fell off, that could have been really bad news...

a good reason to run synthetic oil right there. That little extra measure of protection is sure never a bad thing.
