Mounting a tire on the roof...

Well, as the title says, I wanna mount my spare on the roof of my truck. Would that loom dumb? With the way my exhaust is routed, plus the fact the my spare tire winch is seized up, I can't fit a 33x12.50 underneath my truck. Its a real pain having just sitting loose in my bed. What would the best way be to do this? Is it even possible? Help me out here

I've had a p/u for 10 years and I would never think of mounting the spare on the roof. I've wanted to get a full size spare mounted in the back and I'm going with TireGate whenever they get around to making them for the 3rd Gen. Pickup. I'm sure you can search around and find a mount that will lock your 33" spare in the bed of your truck.

There are several companies that make a bracket setup to mount your spare in the bed. Nice look and great quality. Gotta see if I fcan find it.

btw dont mount it on the roof. Toyota roofs are not setup to handle that stuff. PLus it gets caught on stuff way easy.

Ask Seafarinman about ripping off his roof rack.

Some around here have it on the front of the truck. I might not run it like that for fear of overheating, but it may be worth investigating. I would say a simple bracket that holds the tire that bolts to the bumper, or maybe even frame.

The weight will raise the COG DRAMATICALLY. The extra room in the bed isn't worth rolling the truck, is it?

There are a bunch of options
- reroute the exhaust properly so it will fit underneath
- mount it in the bed
- rear tire carrier
- bed rail tire carrier

Thanks for the input, rowdy, but theres no way I'd mount a tire to the front of my truck. Really, I think that my roof mount idea isnt that great either, i just need somewhere else besides the bed to put it

TireGate Maybe?

See if Wilco's "Vertical Series" TireGate is an option for your truck. Below is a picture of mine (along with my Hi Lift mounted to it). I did not lose any bed space with this tailgate.

Just my opinion but I don't think it would look good up there at all. Unless you had some sort of a headache rack with an over the cab shelf for it to sit on. Then it just looks like a work truck.

I'll be faced with the same problem soon enough. I'll probably end up standing it up and bolting it to the bed rail like in a blazer. Probably the cheapest option too. Another option is a swing away like the 4 runner. The tire gate is nice but expensive and it doesn't close off the bed.

Ha... A dually third gen 4wd would be awesome. Green93, I agree, I really dont think it'd look that great either, but I'm kinda running out of ideas here as I can't afford to lose my bed or tailgate.

Why not get a used 33x10.50 or 9.50 if you can and stuff it back under the bed?

why not just get the spare tire holder set-up off of a 4Runner and just copy the 4Runner, it should fit no problem
