Engine revving uncontrollably

Engine revving uncontrollably
I have an 84 Pickup with a 22re out of an 88 4runner.
After a wheeling trip I noticed the engine was idling a little high; I don't have a tach, but I would guess it was idling at about 1,000rpm. High enough for me to notice, but it was still perfectly drivable. I probably put 100 miles on it like that, I just haven't gotten around to fixing it yet. Yesterday I accelerating through the gears and the engine started redlining without me touching the gas. I shut the engine off and took a look under the hood. The throttle was not stuck, all the linkage was working fine, so I started the engine back up and the problem disappeared. I got about 2 miles down the road, then when I was accelerating through the gears again the same thing happened.
This time the problem didn't fix itself, and I had to have the truck towed home.
The moment I start the engine, it begins to rev up quickly, it is doing this with the throttle plate closed, it isn't a physical linkage issue, so I assume it is either an electrical or a vacuum issue. This is my 1st 22re, and I am not very familiar with them, so I don't know where to start.
Any advice on what to check out?
Thanks!
