cv shaft question??
For those of you that have used refurbished cv's, please chime in....
A few weeks ago, I came across an entire front diff for a 94 4runner. I decided to pull the cv's off and use them for cores for my 95 and noticed that the silver cap located towards the diff was kind of bumpy . Once I traded them in and got my new axles home I noticed that the new remand shafts were different , one had the bumpy cap and the other was flat. I ended up returning both becouse on the wheel side, the seals were all bent up like they had been thrown around during shipping...
So I guess my question is ,flat, bumpy or does it even matter since its just a cap any way???

well, Im calling them caps... there on the inside of the shaft where you connect it to the diff..The factory shaft seemed like it was form fitting for the bearings, the odd shaft that i got ahold of just had a round, flat plate covering the inside bearings,,,,...
hope that helps...

yes, but take it off and take a look on the inside before you put it back on. that is where the difference between flat an bumpy come into play..
both remand shafts were same size, shape untill it came to this end on the inside. even my manual hubs fit the spline just fine..The guys behind the counter really couldnt give me a good answer as to why they were different...

You're talking about the cap on the end of the CV that is kinda in between the the two flanges bolted together in the picture above. That cap is just a grease cover - I think some of the rebuild guys use "bumpy" ones and others use flat. I've gotten two from Autozone, supposedly from the same mfg and the caps looked different (both were kind bumpy though)

the 2 remaned cv's i have seen had super bumpy wheel bearing caps. i just took them off the original cv's and swapped them. no idea if it makes any difference, or if that is even teh proper end of the shaft that you are talking about.
