Belt tension

Does anybody know if there is a good way of checking the belt tension for all the different belts (PS, alt, etc) if you don't have one of the weird belt tension meters? Any good rule of thumb or is there no way around the belt tension meters?

I always use 1/2 " deflecton per 12" of belt length. Seems to work, though I've never checked it against a meter.
