What would you recommend???
I have an 88 toyota that I utilize for hunting, mainly bear hunting which involves a gerat deal of off roading in rugged terrain.
I dont have anything special done to the truck besides a flatbed and bigger tires and rims.
Unfortunately my motor went out on it and I am curious as to what I should do to replace it....I have the 22re in the truck but I have the option of getting a complete 1989 parts truck (frame gone) for cheap but it has a v6.
Is this swap hard? Or should I just search for a 22re and put that in?
Thanks!!

Put in a new 22re in it, don't bother with the 3.0...its a piece of cr**. Lots of places to choose from, but personally go with someone who knows what they are doing. Stay away from Oregon Engine rebuilders.
I use my truck for the same purpose, lots of rugged mountain trails for hunting and getting to my cabin. I was in the same boat as you...in fact here is my build page for some reference

we bear hunt here with hounds. where are you? what kind of bear hunting do you need the truck for (with dogs on truck, cutting tracks, getting to bait station or glassing spot)?
i have built 4 yotas for bear hunting. here is where i would start.
keep the 22re. put a 2 speed e-fan on it (dosent need to be 2 speed but nice to have).
lockright or spartan in the rear.
remove the front sway bar.
body armor (not just front and rear guards but diff ring gear protection.
a little more advanced. front and rear lockers, winch, SAS, 4.7 low range, re-gear, lift,.......

swapping the V6 for a 22RE would involve changing a lot of surrounding parts including the trans. as well, so i'd not recommend it either, particularly since it's not an improvement to a "better" engine. i had to make this same choice a few years ago. without committing to the additional expense of a worthy swap, like a 2RZ or 3RZ from a tacoma, i concluded the smartest move was a new 22RE longblock. i've got 15k on it now. slow but strong, and simplest of all options.

Rebuild your 22re how you want it done..by yourself or with a friends or yotatech guys help. They are awesome motors. It isn't hard...
My motor for example... engnbldr rv head with an LC cam and new rocker assembly, fresh rebuilt bottom end fully machined and deckd... a bunch of new parts n mods here and there rebuilt injectors...
Wasn't more than $1600 TOTAL for all that including machine work and all kinds of new little parts and mods. You do that and it will last forever, have some more tq/hp, and get better gas mileage.

I am in Northern WI, I use it for running hounds, flatbed with big dog box etc...
I think I am just going to by a used 22re and swap it in. I dont want to dump a ton of money in it since it is my "spare" truck.
Is a 22r swap practical? I guess I dont know a ton about yota's so could I put my 22re intake and such on any certain 22r's?
Thanks again guys!

22r is just carbed. keep your fuel injection. depending on how much weight the box with hounds is you might want to do the zuk coil mod on the rear or put a single or dual coil off of the center diff. the added coils are a better/smoother ride than a add a leaf.
buy a 22r/re longblock and swap all of the parts or depending on what is wrong with the 22re that is in your truck now rebuild, etc.... see what u can find on craigslist
get the motor going and get a spartan locker from marlin crawler.

So not to sound dumb.....If I bought a 22r ( i can find them close and reasonably priced) what things from my 22re would all need to be swaped? Or would this be to much of a hassle?

U prolly could, but would it be worth all the work/effort? consider that it may also b less cost effective to convert a carb'd motor to efi, than to just buy a decent used re....

I have no affiliation with any of these people. I just used search tempest and looked at everything within 250 miles of somewhere in WI. I don't know that state very well. I live in Commiefornia. Good luck with the swap. I've heard of people taking the intake off a 22re and putting it on a 22r but it is more work. This could be a good opportunity for you to get some accessories like power steering, etc.

check car-part.com , they're a search engine for registered salvage yards. i just put in a random N. WI zip code and i see a bunch of 22REs listed from $700 and up for engines described as running. you can probably negotiate the deal to your liking if you call around enough.
stick with the 22RE so you get more usable spare parts. no point in picking up carb'd parts if you're not going to convert to carb'd.
good luck
