i geuss i got it for free from a guy that was scraping the truck will that tranny bolt to the 22r in my 85

yea, but is about 6" shorter, so you'll need a longer driveshaft, and the output flange is a different bolt pattern.

And unless it's a crawler, you really don't want a 4 speed. Try going on a road trip with that thing. Why would you want to change your W56 out for a 4 speed?

x2, 4spds are damn near worthless in these trucks

I popped the t-case of my old L43 and chucked it for scrap

So the W56 must be trashed? You're leaving out valuable information. Why, if you have a perfectly good, much stronger tranny than the L43, would you swap it out, even if the truck will only be in the woods? What's wrong with the W56?

Anyways, I'm sure you know what you're doing, so now you know what you've got, and you can make an informed decision!

Try replacing the shifter seat first. Reverse is not a gear that generally goes out on a transmission. http://www.marlincrawler.com/catalog/70/parts_upgrades
