turboing my 22re any suggestions
I just recently obtained my 92 toyota 4x4 and i was looking to add some more power to the truck with out having to heavily modifying the whole truck like dropping a 4.3 or small block chevy motor. The stock motor has low miles on it so i consider on adding a small low boost turbo. Any suggestions? Thanks.

You will have to heavily modify the block to run a turbo. For example you will have to drill and tap holes in the block to support the oil demands of the turbo. Most people start with a 22RE turbo block and go from there. It's not as easy as puting a turbo on the truck and pressing the gas.

Welcome to YT. YOu are gonna need to do a ton of research if you really want to pursue this project.
Here is a good resource: http://www.22rte-trucks.com/simplemachinesforum/

Shop around find a 22rtec. most seem to have bad blocks.
They can be had
It is a whole lot more work then just bolting on the manifold and turbo.
I say if you want to keep it Toyota swap in a 3.4 if all you want is horse power and lots of parts small block Chevy.
Good luck either of those options will require lots of research

a motor swap would probably be easier than a turbo project in my opinion but a forced induction setup would be fun; LCE has some great stuff for the 22RE, even a SC. not sure what HP/Torque it's capable of but they have pretty much everything for this motor.
If you just want to run low boost, consider a 'remote' turbo, pretty much a bolt on like the SC and can run something like 5psi, might be an option. HP/torque wise they are generally in line with a SC'd setup
good luck!

wait, you posted in the newb section about wantin more power and talkin about a turbo setup? like mentioned above, add a cam header and a few doodads and then if it dont suit you, turbo it. but personally, i dont think the money you throw at these 22res is worth the small HP increase, but, thats just me.

you are talking about putting a turbo on a motor that only has, what? like 120 HP???? if you want power gains, drive something else. if you want a bullet proof motor that can climb a mountain and laugh at the top? then keep the 2.4 the way it is.

Winner...
lol, "But my Pa's Chebby's gotz the 4:11's?"
Aint that the truth! Longevity, or power... generally can't have both...
Or it's followed by a "Needs more MPG" thread...

Ok, 1st off... Nobody knows how or what you want to build the truck for.
Mud is one thing, DD/ Expedition is another. Most here will build a conservative rig that they can drive to the trail, and back home again.
In general, Toyota's have low final drives but the tranny gears are more like a cars. So... the rears ratio + the engine power = pretty much useless. But the engine will...
EDIT: Language waring! VVV

For every 1" you deviate from the factory 28" tire, you LOSE .10th of your gear. 28 = 4:11. 29 = 4:01. 30 = 3:91. 31 = 3:81... And so on.
That's why gears are so important... You can only get the worlds most reliable, most dependable, most rugged 115hp 4cly to do so much...
2nd... Low psi Turbo? lol, the factory Turbo's were only 7.5 psi... The block was decompressed from 9.1:1 to 7.5:1. And they were TURDS compared to a 22R/E!
I own 2 of them. None run and have low miles... 170,000.
they had their problems. But that was stock. If you know the risks, understand your goals, and are REALISTIC, then it's a free country my friend. You can do whatever you want.

I agree regear the truck and maybe do some small but very effective stuff like adding a better camshaft and a header. These trucks are not that powerful, but do work very well in low gear in 4wd. If you really want some power swap in a V8 or sell your rig and buy one that has already been swapped.
I own a '86 22RE-T turbo charged truck and even it with a few upgrades ( 4.56 gears, camshaft, full exhaust/no cat) is not that strong, but with 33" TSL's it will still outrun my '92 Naturally aspirated stock 22RE truck that has 30" street tires. Overall I'd say turboing your existing motor would be a waste of money and time.

Just whatever you do, do NOT just slap on a CT20 and stock exhaust manni you found at a junk yard.
The biggest pieces of poop on a RTE is the stock CT20 Turdblow. 2nd is the exhaust manifold.
Just waller out the holes and the CT26 off a (7MGTE) Supra will fit right on it...
might not be the exact air ratio and may lag a little more, but it'll work, and be better than the POS CT20 that came on a Turbo truck.
Never, ever... ever ever ever ever ever! Spend money on a CT20.
