Timing issues

I have recently bought a 1991 Toyota truck with a 3.0 V6. The previous owner had put a new motor in it and it runs great.

************HERE IS THE PROBLEM*****************************

I went to get it smogged and it passed emissions fine but the timing is way off, I was told 77 degrees. I have the timing belt cover off and can see the all the timing marks except the crankshaft one. When the cam marks are alligned (TDC) the timing mark is about 2.5 inches off and the rotor is not pointing at #1. no matter how many times I turn over the motor, none of the marks are where they should be. Was the belt installed wrong? How can it run as well as it does if it's wrong?

a somg station would never check "cam" timing...so stop looking there...if your "ignition " timing reads way off then your tps is prob not adjusted right or defective. Before you put the ecu in by pass mode check the timing. Then after you put the ecu in bypass mode confirm the timing retarded. if it did not then the ecu is not going into bypass mode..fyi,if it passed emissions then the chances are your cam timing is ok.

When my two cam marks are lined up ( straight up) and the #1 piston is at TDC on the cpmpression stroke, should'nt the timing mark also be at 0 TDC? cuz it's not! it is about 2.5 inches away from 0 TDC. And the rotor is not pointing at #1 in the dist cap.

How do I remove the dampner without turning over the motor? I do not have an impact driver.

I just read back on some threads on how to remove the crankshaft bolt. Does the starter trick really work? It seems something would break.

It's the only way to go if you want my opinion, sans impact driver. Unless you can rent or rig up the SST to hold the pulley still.

I'm at a complete loss as to how your engine could run being that far off.

I see. That big ol' notch isn't the mark. It's much smaller (red arrow).

To get the crank pulley bolt loose, put a wrench or ratchet long enough to reach a frame rail or other solid part and "TAP" the motor over.

I just went out and looked again. Thats dirt where your arrow is. It was a Toyotas only shop that told me it is 77 degrees off. I am pretty sure the groove is the timing mark (according to the book).

Well, it's been tampered with. The mark is not supposed to be a wide notched V shape. It's smaller, about 1mmx1mm, like half as big as that or less even. Check under the dirt, cause that's where it should be anyway.

I just got the crank bolt off using the starter method. That is freakin crazy!! Anyway, my crank sprocket marks are lined up and my cam marks are lined up so I am going to put it all back together. I am hoping that it is my distributor that is off a couple teeth.
