sediment in t-case oil--bad news?

I just changed out the gear oil in my tranny and t-case. As it was pouring out of the t-case, I noticed a lot of metal flakes. In the bottom of the catch pan there are a lot of shiny metal bits. I have no idea why there would be so much deposit in there since it doesn't get used but maybe 10 - 30 miles a month. The only thing I could guess at is that it hadn't been changed in a long time (like maybe ever). The question is, how much sediment should I expect and when should I be getting alarmed? Change again in a couple months and see if it's the same or start to worry now?

Is the t-case still working ok ?, If its not making any strange noises and its not poping out of gear, then i wouldn`t worry about it. Its possible that the oil has never been changed before. Change the oil again in a few months and see how it looks.

I haven't noticed it acting strange. I should have mentioned that I bought it with 119k and it now has 142k. It hasn't had the gear oil changed since I bought it. I was assuming that, since it came from a dealer's lot, they would have changed the oil. In fact, I know they changed it in the diffs because I could see some spillage from the fill plug. I just thought they would have done all the oil, but maybe not in the t-case for some reason.

I'll check it again in a few months. Gear oil for the t-case is cheap.

Just because you see oil around the diff fill plug, don`t assume that the dealer changed the diff oil, all the probably did was just top it off. It would be a good idea if you went ahead and changed it your self, that way you know its been done.

Don't worry! All gear oil has been changed now. My garage now smells like a sulfur plant.
