Price check on a 1989 4Runner

It seems the prices of the 1st gens keep going up and because of their age and rarity its hard to find prices that are current. I'm looking at an '89 V6 SV5 with a seized engine. Here is info from the seller:

MOTOR NEEDS REBUILDING-- locked up motor just happened November 2014. Over $2000 spent on it in 2013-1014.
*V6 5Speed Manual Transmission
*266,000 miles approximately
*Only has had 2 owners!

NEVER WRECKED!
Straight sheet metal [fenders, doors, quarter panels] are in great condition!

PARTS THAT NEED REPAIR/REPLACING:
* Motor is locked up
* Sunroof is cracked
* Gas tank needs cleaning or replacing and new fuel filter and clean out fuel lines
* Windshield Surround needs sealing and replacing
* Both car doors need control units for power windows and locks
* Back window is electric.... it mostly works, but think wiring needs checking
* Convertible top fiberglass lip/rain gutter broken off from racks
* Some rust on hood
* Dash has some sun damage
* Windshield is cracked

THESE ITEMS HAVE BEEN REPLACED IN PAST COUPLE YEARS:
* New Starter
* Alternator
* Fuel Pump
* Fuel Injectors Cleaned, and replace 2 with new ones
* Plugs
* Air Filter

PARTS THAT WORK OR ARE IN VERY GOOD-EXCELLENT CONDITION:
* Interior Seats are in excellent condition, both front and back seats
* Console Arm Rest has been recovered with grey vinyl cloth/professionally stitched by upholstery
* Sun Visors are good with mirror
* Sun Roof Cover is good
* Air Conditioner, Filled with Freon last year
* Back Wiper and Washer
* Front Wiper and Washers
* Aluminum wheels
* Newer never used 4WD Hubs
* Has Trailer Hitch with 2" ball
* All 3 mirrors, both sides and rear view are intact
* Both side mirrors adjusted by electric motors are working
* Rear defroster works
* Cruise Control works
* Comes with original manual
* 4 Plastic covers at floorboard for back seat are intact
* All trim around interior windows

He's asking $1500. I'm afraid that by the time I rebuild/replace the motor I would have been better off buying a different truck although the body is in good shape and these are getting harder to find.

First I want to know if its a fair price for the state this truck is currently in. 2nd, I've found a 96 4runner that was rolled which would give me a running 3.4, he's asking $650 for the car. Would this work or even be a good idea? Any advice is appreciated.

Red face

I think $1500.00 for that non running vehicle is way to much .

Because it can`t be driven you have no idea what the rest of the drive train is like.

Myself I would offer no more then scrap price. That is me.

The $650.00 for the rolled over 3.4 is not a bad deal as long as the engine did not run to long with the oil pan on top.

Seems high to me for a non running truck, but it is going to depend on what you want and how bad you want it. It is complete and has several options. To add those options, parts, and repairs can add up quick. The wheels around here go for 25-40 each, SR5 guage is typically 100, seats 40 each, door panels I have only seen twice, 250 is about what it cost for me on getting ac working. They will nickel and dime you to death if you are not careful.

Location is another area of price. West coast probably easier to find. In the north east, it is probably a great deal. Even if you do get it what about access to parts that cant necessarily be gotten from part stores and the net.

If my dream truck was a black, semi loaded SR5 options truck, it would be worth it to me as it is complete and solid and was willing to do the work myself to do the 3.4 swap. If I was just wanting a first gen runner I would pass on it.

Without driving it and knowing the rest of the truck, it is a gamble on what else is going to need repaired according to the owner. If money wasnt the issue, would you buy this truck if it was running and planned on keeping it for a few years or one you would just trade off after a short period of time?

the rust on the hood is surface rust? no cancer in the body? check the door pillars in front, under the gutters, they leak and drip down into the pillar column, which rusts out from the inside... even my cali 4runner is doing that.

v6 into v6 is supposed to be easier than v6 into 22re, but people have said that the easiest way to do it is to swap dashboards... in other words, what you are proposing is a big job, and it won't necessarily be cheap.
