Power steering Pulley 1989 V6 4x4 Pickup

My power steering pulley was making a clanging sound. Mechanic said i needed a new Power steering....But then I noticed the Nut that holds the pulley on was just a bit loose. i tightened and all seemed well, no clanging sound. But then I tried to turn the steering wheel and it would jerk around and a screeching sound would come from the power steering..... So i tried to loosen up the nut but the pulley would spin.....Now i cant drive my baby. Someone please HELP!...

Perhaps follow what your mechanic told you in the first place?

Nah man.. I need to save some cash with Christmas around the corner. I looked into it some more and I may need a pulley holder.

Not sure how the p/s pump belt is set up on the V6, but one option for the time being is to remove that belt until you have time/money to deal with the pump.

You have enough money for a pulley holder, but not to fix the pump?!

Why not just find a used pump, fix the problem, and be done with it? If when too tight the pump won't operate, and when too loose it clangs, you have a problem. You should be able to tighten the pulley to spec, and not have any problems. Besides any of that, its keyed, so the pulley can't simply spin loosly on the pump shaft. Even if the nut was MIA, the tightness of the nut won't affect it

hmmmmm, ok... Yeah because at idle there is no sound. Once I turn the wheel, the pulley rubs against the nut and then screeches. It didn't have this issue 10 minutes ago. Before I monkeyed around with it it drove fine, just made a clanging sound.

I would take it apart (slowly). Take pictures with your cell phone of where everything goes or take notes. If the shaft is spinning when you try to tighten the bolt, then either the key that holds the pulley is gone or something more sinister. About your only bet after that is get one from junk yard or brand new. If or when you do get another one, take the one in your vehicle apart and see if you can fix. You will either get your money back or have an extra if something bad with the pump happens (again.)

the shaft did spin, but I used my hand to stop it from spinning when i removed the nut....Then I loosened the 39 screw http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...ker/PSassy.png ...I leveled the power steering pump. Tightened that screw, but then noticed the belt was a lil' loose. I tightened the nut(43) but the pulley started spinning again. This time it was waaaay tough to hold and tighten at the same time. So i tightened the nut as far as it would go. On idle it spins fine with no sound. Then i had my brother turn the steering wheel. As he did this the pulley would bang against the nut and make a screeching sound as the steering wheel would slowly jerk.......what gives?....

The numbers you are calling the bolts and nuts are torque specs. Not code numbers for the specific bolts.
Just saying.

I figured...but I just "know how to fix" things. I don't know the names of those parts so I figured id name what I see on the diagram. Thanks though.

...I do see a tiny slot on the pulley(but no key/pin) should something be there? and can I over tighten the nut? I men tighten until I can't tighten anymore.???

It sounds like you tightened the nut on too far.

...I was wondering if that was possible.....so how any suggestions on how to I test this issue? Because now the Pulley is tough to keep from spinning as I loosen the nut......

Again, tightening the nut has ZERO to do with your issue. Since the pulley is keyed, it should NEVER EVER SPIN.

If it spins, you are missing the key. Simple.

The pulley isn't rubbing against the nut, unless they keyway is missing.

And again...YOU CANNOT TIGHTEN THE NUT TOO FAR IF YOU HAVE THE WOODRUF KEY IN THERE

You pulled the pulley off dropped the key now it will not work .

All the nut does is keep it from coming off the key holds it in place.

Although I don`t have a V6 here but it might be possible to have put the pulley on backwards which might put pressure on the pump housing.

I'm not ignoring your post, its just that you said to do what my mechanic suggested.... I can see that its the pulley... So can I just replace the key??? I can see a small empty slot on the front side of the pulley.
