Pitman Arm Position

90' 4runner

How do I know it's in the proper position when I am replacing it? I'm rebuilding the front end so the tie rods and everything are out too. Is it just a matter of having the steering wheel centered and putting on the new pitman arm as straight as possible by eye?

Apparently there should be marks on the cross shaft and pitman arm to line them up according to the FSM. But what exactly is the cross shaft? The FSM diagram does not list that. Could it be the relay rod?
