Newbie tires rubbing when turning

Hey guys i was wondering if you could help me . i need some extra space for my tires (they rub in the fenders while turning) and was wondering if there were fender flares out there for my runner that wont cost $400. or maybe if i could get the tacoma flares of the same year if those would work. and for those of you that have them installed how well they work. thanks

is it rubbing the fender flares or the front bumper. I know my tires are 33's and rub the front bumper when turning, but arent effected by the flares at all.

I don't see how the tires are actually rubbing the flares. If it rubs while you're turning, it's rubbing in the middle of the wheel well itself (more inside from the flare), at the bottom of the firewall or on the front bumper like NickP suggested. The outside edge of the tire never comes into contact with the actual flare.

Trim the plastic liner where it rubs and pound the pinch weld behind the liner flat with a hammer. It's self-explanitory once you cut the liner and see behind it.

If its rubbing the inside liner, you can also get some wheel spacers, i believe WabFab here on the forum sells them for a good price.

Spacers will make it so it doesn't rub on the UCAs, but they will actually cause it to rub worse on the wheel wells. His problem is he's running 12.5" wide tires with only a 2" body lift. I have 4" of lift and I still rubbed when I tried 305s (33x12) and those are smaller. Sorry to say, but you are going to continues to rub unless you hack A LOT out of your fenders.

You could get some cheap 16" stock wheels so you can run the sizes that are tried and tested and everyone on here has 285/75R16s (33x11) or 255/85R16s (33.5X10). Anything more than an 11" wide 33 and you'll have issues. I'm sure your 33x12.5s rub on the back too, you probably just haven't flexed them out enough to tell because you can't tuck a tire that wide up into the rear fender well of a 3rd gen without cutting or running like 5" backspaced wheels.

Actually, you will probably need to get another 1" more lift to clear any 33s. You could go with some OME 881s and 906s, and then you could clear an 11" wide tire.

ywow thanks for the info. i bought the tires for a 89 4runner that i have and they worked great for the 100 miles they went before the truck blew a gasket and is out of commission now. so i was just trying to swap them to the 96 and hopefully get some use from them. maybe i will try to get some 33x11's if those will fit better
