NEWBIE rear axle seal leaking
hey guys, i know i post alot and im sorry, im kinda a noob :-/
but i have another problem with my hilux.
the rear axle is leaking and i need to replace the seal and bearing but it will cost me $500 at the local mechanic, my question is can i do it myself ?
Is it possible for me to be albe to get the axle out, the seal out and the bearing out ? and then get the new parts all back in correctly ?
i have many tools but they are just standard, nothing special. (hammer, wrench etc.)
so can i do it without making it worse ? and if so could somebody tell me how, like step by step, that would really help.

Um, I thought you needed a hydraulic press to do the rear axle seal.... Maybe I am thinking you need the press for the bearing?!? Time for me to go look at that 4x4wire link!

put them in the freezer for about 2 hours then they will go in with even the slightest of taps, then leave to thaw and re-assemble
but im going to have a go at doing it myself anyway becasue if it works i save myself $500 and if it doesnt work it cost's me $35

Ok so here's what i have done so far.
i have taken off the wheel to expose the drum and struggled getting the bugger off
I then took the drum off to expose the pads and master cylinder, which was all coverd in gearbox oil
i then unscrewed the brake line and removed the handbrake cable, and unscrewd the 4 bolts on the rear of the drum.
Then i pulled the axle out and took a look at my worn out oil seal.
and this is what my bearing and axle look like.
so how the heck do i get the bearing and bearing race off with just hand tools !! iv tried everything

I don't know why, but that 4x4 wire article link I gave you only had 1/2 the article. Heres the link that explains how to remove the bearing:

I would probably take it to someone who has a bearing press and let a shop do that part, unless you have the SST for it.

i see, it looks like you dont have the retaining clip, that is kind of scary. just go get six of them and you will be good to go. if you have any more questions, just pm me again. once you get it done you will ask your self why does it cost $500

Yea, I knew there was a requirement for a press in there somehwere. But you probably saved a good chunk of money by doing the rest of the work yourself.

took me ten time to get the axle shaft to slide through the bearing. if your going to just get it pressed out and in then you dont need six retaining clips. i used them as a spacer to stack on each other so i coud hammer down on the bearing and the race. then the retaining clips come off easy.
taking it to a press is an option.

some get lucky with the( slam it on a piece of wood method), but ive changed over a dozen toyota rear wheel bearings and have always had to press them off the axle.. maybe im just unlucky . though installing them was cake with the perfect sized pipe and hammer.

x2, I had to get mine pressed as well but it was cheap and worth it. I was getting frustrated with it, and I start breaking stuff when I get frustrated so I didn't think twice about taking it to get pressed....

Ok guys this is what's happened:
I was about to take the axle down the the mechanic when I decided to have one last go, so I got a price of very hard would and went crazy, and whey! It worked!! I was then able to get all the old parts off with ease.
I then put the new seal on and sanded outthe old retainer so it was now larger and would no longer get stuck on the axle.
I then put the new bearing and retainer on and used to old retainer to hammer them both down together, and after yet more insane smacking it went on and I was able to reassemble the truck
it's not 100% put back together yet. I'm buying new brake pads as these are coated in oil and very low. So I still havnt had a chance to test my handiwork. But at least it's not leaking oil yet

, not to dismantle it or reassemble it, i was surprised when it finaly poped off, and even more so that the local garage would have charged $500 for what i could do for $35 and a hammer!
