what can i do to my truck that don't cost much for performance my truck is a 87' 4x4 22re i think with a 5 speed standard thanks a pile alex

Not to much to do in terms of performance on the cheap on these engines but...

ISR mod (search it )
tune up
higher flow airfilter will help a LITTLE in the power department, but at the cost of less filtration. (I stick with oem paper filters)
Make sure your gearing in your diffs is suited to the tire size you are running.

there are some decent tri-y headers available for a few bills
replace the stock exhaust (and possibly the cat with a high-flow) with 2 1/4" pipe and better muffler such as one of the magnaflow or flowmaster units (with or without a header)

Hey. I'm dirt poor and i do my best too. I bought a old school cherry bomb for 30 bucks, I'm custom building a cold air intake. Saves a lot of money. If i were to try and buy an already built intake for my truck it would cost 250 but since i'm building it myself maybe 30 bucks max. If you want to do a lift I would say start out with a body lift. They don't do anything but get you higher off the ground so you can add bigger tires but their a start when you don't have a lot of money. if you want bigger tires you can do two things. You could try and buy new ones i recomend procomp. Not neccesarilly because their the best but because you can get a full set for under 700 new which is still a lot of money to me but their pretty nice tires. Or you could be patient and wait tell you see some show up used in the local paper. You could get a pretty decent pair for next to nothing. it make take a while though. If you have access to a welder than you can do a ton of stuff. Just keep your mind open to idea's and you'll end up with a pretty nice rig for pretty cheap.

22re and performance dont belong in the same category....

Save your money to make the truck reliable (in stock form) and upgrade the more important things that will get you down the trail

I would recommend you read these forums and see what other people do and decide exactly what you are looking for. Remember that it is better to have a reliable truck than a pretty piece of poo. You've chosen Toyota so you are already headed down the right path. If you treat your truck right and take care of it it will take care of you.

Since this is your first vehicle (I assume), you might learn how to work on your truck. It will be easy to do since Toyota Trucks are lifted more than most vehicles stock and you can slide right underneath it to change the oil...etc.

First off, do you know any history about the truck? How does the truck run?

Do a search on here in the forum dedicated to your year model rig, there is a TON of info out there. There are a lot of people on here with similar rigs and I'm sure they are looking for the same info...a lot of them have already found it I'm sure.

I'm pretty new to this forum also. My best advice is to just read up on this forum as much as you can. Some of the guys on here know a ton and everyone is super helpful. Also, the factory service manual and/or Haynes manual will teach you lots.

FAQ's are a great place to start - some of the pics may be dead but the core info is still there.

It is actually the ISR mod..."Intake Silencer Removal" mod.
If you do a Search for "ISR mod" you will get a TON of hits.

A lot of people have done it with great success although to be honest, I haven't heard much about it being done with the 22r. I personally like the deckplate mod more. Deckplate mod is where you cut a 4" (some do bigger) hole in your airbox and put a marine deckplate (allows the ability for it to be open or closed) in. Clear your ECU (remove the EFI fuse for a little while) and you're set. I noticed a performance gain right away.

Good advice, however the '87 makes it a 2nd Gen 4x4 Toyota (84-88). First gens 4x4 are 79-83

As far as when toyota switched to EFI, EFI was first available in 85, however, the 22r (carb) was still available up until 89, mostly in base trucks. I've heard it was available until 95 in commercial models. Pop the hood, if its a carb, you'll see a large circular object on top of the engine, if its EFI, it'll say so on the left (as viewed from front) side of the engine. Of course, if the label is still intact, you'll see either a 22r (carb) or 22re (EFI) sticker on the front.
