Die down like the motor dies? Or just slow down significantly?
If it's the latter then it's just the 3.0L. The thing isn't the greatest V6, I know, I have one and have spent a lot of time trying to figure reasonable ways to make it stronger. If it's literally dying on the upslopes then it may be a mechanical failure or electrical. I'm not sure.

Yeah, so it's just an engine strength issue?
Really, there are a few things to be done to help the 3vze; headers, intake, TBs, gearing.
If you search you'll probably find a few things you might entertain doing.

I have 249,000 on mine and I am going to swap a 3.4 to make up for the issues and many more you will run into like MPG but it is reliable and can be a die hard but next thing you need to worry about is the head gaskets and timing belt.
building it to get good power and fuel milage is going to very very expensive

I have a 91 3.0 a/t and the motor runs strong. It's just anemic as all hell. Not much to do other than switch your gears. I have 4.56's and they aren't bad, but it still down shifts on hills and so on. I would say swap to 4.88's and life should be good.
