Hi everyone,
I'm new to this forum so hopefully I posted this in the right place .
I'm 18 and I don't know much about these Toyota 4runners.

The vehicle is a 1987 22re 4runner .
I have a problem with a relay that is located in the fuse block .

I believe it's called the main relay .,but I'll post a picture to made sure It's the right one .

Anyway the relay gets hot after it runs for 5 mins. or so .

It all started the other day when my mom drove it to the store .
When she was on her way home It wouldn't start up . So I bought some starter fluid and sprayed a small burst in the throttle body and it fired right up ,so I started looking at the fuel system . I checked for power at the pump with the key and nothing .. I ended up wiggle in the fuses one by one . then tried the relays and the very bottom one was hot as hell.
I have a diagram that shows the main relay and all that it runs to .


If you look real close you can see that I have one circled in red and the other in blue . To me they both look alike .The one in red is getting hot . My question is what would cause this ?

I'm guessing maybe a wire is grounding out somewhere. Could anyone maybe tell me what to look for ?

It looks like the main relay for the EFI it will be Toyota part number 90987-02004-83. If the original relay is a Toyota part it should have a part number on it, the old number was 90987-02004, 90080-87003 or 90080-02002. These are readily available. Ok thanks for the info . I just bought a new one from Autozone . I put it in and it still heats up . Is it supposed to get hot like this ? ( and if not what would cause this ? )

A relay can generate some heat. If it's getting excessively hot, or not lasting very long, you'll need to check the wiring and the component it operates.

the same fuse on both my runners get hot as well, though it has never affected either trucks starting.

i shorted the starter stupidly and now i can find out which fuse or link blew.... this blows

From what I figured out .. the relay is supposed to buzzes so, .. with the old relay it didn't buzz and when it doesn't buzz ,the fuel pump doesn't get any juice. At least it didn't in my case . It starts every time now . I was just worried about it getting hot. ( not hot enough to burn the plastic , but if you run your leg across it while driving you'll feel it believe me . )
