I have an 87 toyota pickup with a 22r in it.
It runs and drives but hardly has power at all.
I have replaced rod bearings and still doesnt have any power.
I need help figuring out whats wrong with it. .

PLEASE HELP ME!!!

have you checked the spark plugs, fuel filter, cleaned your carb, etc. recently?

Put oil in it, changed spark plugs and wires, and put bearing in it bcuz thats what i was told was wrong with it when i got it. Ive only had the truck for bout 2-3 weeks.

Hey my name is isaac im 15 years old and i have an 87 toyota 4x4 pickup with a 22r in it. I may be 15 but i do kno a good bit bout vehicles.

I traded for this yota bout 3 weeks ago. It is a good lookin lil truck, but it has engine problems.

It runs and drives but has very very little power. It doesnt knock or anything like that. I have tore it down and replaced rod bearings and put it back together with all new gaskets. It didnt help anything. Now i dont kno where the smartest place to start would be to figure out where the problem is.

Anything you can recommend will be greatly appreciated.

I was always taught to start with the cheapest fix and work from there, so i would probably start with the air filter and the fuel filter and see if that helps any.

Checking timing is free, checking compression is free. Assuming you have the tools (timing light & compression gauge) which are cheap at say a Harbor Freight store.

How many miles on it?

Fuel filters are cheap, air filter, well doubt that would cause major problems unless it was soaked wet with oil or something. Distributor cap and rotor is cheap as well. What did you gap the spark plugs to and what kind did you use?

Timing can effect the power a lot . I had a 86 22r that the po had replaced the timing chain in and supposedly got it out of time. The truck was barely able to pull a hill in 2nd when it should do it 4th. It turned out the chain was installed correctly but he had installed the distributor one tooth off.The po had driven the truck for a couple thousand miles like this.After reinstalling the distributor correctly it ran great and climbed the hills like they where nothing.

Thank you guys alot. I was thinking the same thing. Timing and Distributor. Didnt kno if that would b best place to start tho. I read in another thread that it could be head gasket. Should i go to that trouble to check?

To xxxtreme22r- I wasnt one who did plugs and wires, My step bro did it. I put rod bearings in it. I dont have much experience with yotas. Helped one of my buds with timing chain and setting and the other with rod bearing but that was it. Any recommendations on plugs?

I would assume anything really, but on my 22r well It did not like the E3 plugs whatsoever.

I like my NGK V-Powers, but alot also like using standard Denso Plugs. Anything but a Bosch plug or a pregapped platinum plug I would say.

b4 you start removing distributor and timing chain components...do a simple compression test like xxxtreme22r recommends. That will at least tell you if your getting proper suction and exhaust. The if compression checks out, you can eliminate the valves as a concern and focus on timing.

You could spend all day and night messing with timing and get nowhere if your valves aren't closing properly.
